I have one sitting on my shelf that I could send in the name of getting spares made. It has already been taken apart and put back together, so I don't mind if it gets pulled apart again.

I will try to grab some good pics of it tonight.

Please forgive my vocabulary, I am not sure what the proper names for all the pieces are:

Gear removed from Car

cover and 4 10 MM bolts removed. notice the brown puck sitting in the groove, it normally sticks to the cover when you pull it apart.

Rubber puck/bushing thingy everyone is talking about. Ignore the spring in the picture

removing the center assembly from the gear. Note the black apex seals, some are coming out with the center assembly.

Center assembly removed with all apex seals in their relative positions

Close up of center assembly

Close up of gear with center assembly removed

Close up of rear (camshaft) side of center assembly

Close up of apex seal with spring

removing locking pin from gear

Close up of locking pin

Gear with locking pin removed

locking pin engagement in center assembly

VVT assembly in fully advanced position

VVT assembly in fully retarded position (this is the position it locks in)

Found some noise on Miata.net about the VVT cars not liking "heavier" oil like the Rotella T6.

Any truth behind that?

Mine's fine with it. But its never run on an OEM ecu since some guy did something to it that resulted in it showing up in a cali wrecking yard.

Typical m.net post. Engine over heating? Blame the engine oil. Have a flat? Blame the engine oil.

Davezorz, I never saw your post on the 30th of July, 2014, but it's wonderful. I fixed a few grammatical errors, and I'm quoting it for a sticky in the engine section. Wonderful.

That's what i figured. This car is driving me nuts, and the shitty part is that i know if it wasn't 3 hours away, i could probably figure it out in a couple hours at this point.

All i can do now is just order a bunch of **** to carpet bomb it again and make him bring it back to me one weekend.

I'm running t6. Runs like a beast.
And now I'm convinced that P0010 was from cam sensor heatsoak, cause its gone since we dipped into the 90's

Update!

**** my life!

I procured yet another actuator that has been VERIFIED to have never been opened. I also sprung for a complete gasket/o-ring VVT kit from Miataroadster.

Tore down the car Friday night, verified that timing had been set right, that nothing was leaking externally. Swapped actuators, replaced all o-rings, filter, and gaskets.

Still does the noise on start up. I'm now of the opinion that the noise has absolutely nothing to do with anything i've ever done to the car. Car still makes great power, runs really smoothly and quietly after start up.

What else do i look at? The only things VVT-related that i can think of at this point is the solenoid itself? Or whatever you call it. The thing that goes into the side of the VC with the plug on it. Looks like a pocket rocket but black.

Anything non-vvt related i need to look at? Tensioner and idler is good. Bearings and such are good on the pumps and alternator. No obvious heat shields rattling.

I have come to the conclusion that nb2 vvt is made entirely of unicorn tears and pixie dust, therefore there is literally no logical fix or explanation for anything related to it.
It decides when it works, and it decides when it doesn't. The universe just has to deal with it

Yeah this whole thing has pretty much sealed my resolve to never own an NB2.

The worst part is that i'm about 80% sure at this point that the noise has ****-all to do with VVT.

My 04 has this noise on start up. I haven't had the actuator off or apart. This sound reminds me of the early to mid 90's cbr600f2 cam chain noise. The factory cam chain tensioner uses oil pressure to produce the tension. The fix for it was to replace with a new factory part or go to a manual tensioner.

Wtf does this have to do with our timing BELTS that have spring tensioners? IDK but the sound is very similar.

my suspicion is something about the oil pump

at least when my bro had an 03 with this same issue that's where it sounded like it came from. NOT the top of the engine, but the bottom

This sounds like top half of motor to me. Owner disagrees i think. It doesn't stick around long enough to place it, and you have to wait usually 6-8 hours or more between starts for it to happen again. Maddening.

The solution is, as always, BOOST

Unfortunately, i do believe that Major Hater has converted yet another impressionable young man away from the world of boost this weekend.

Or fortunately, however you look at it.
