Exclamation Turbo knocking after engine is shut off

So today I drove to work and when I turned my car off I heard a tapping noise coming from the turbo . It sounded like someone was tapping on it gently with a ball peen hammer. It slowed down and eventually stopped after a few minutes. I am sure that this is my turbo spooling down while scraping the housing. When I started to drive back home I started the car for 30 seconds and shut it off and no noise. After the 10 minute drive home (trying to stay out of boost) I shut the car off and the same noise happened. Is my turbo completely boned or will a rebuild be enough. I know I can't really know too much until I take the turbo off an inspect it, but what are people's thoughts?

It's probably just the water boiling out of the center housing. This is a Good Thing™, as it's taking heat with it.

That, or the super-heated parts are contracting and shifting about. Maybe time to re-tighten all the hardware.

Either way, even with a ball-bearing center, the shaft will spin down within seconds, not minutes, of engine shutoff. If it goes on for "a few minutes" then it's definitely not the wheel scraping the housing.

So I have to admit that I'm terrible about checking fluids since I'm at school and live in an apartment with a 45 degree parking lot. Do you think it could just be low on coolant or oil?

EDIT: what I'm tryin' to say is I have been meaning to check coolant and oil for a week now and just haven't done it yet.

Mine started making a noise like you describe (though at a VERY low volume, I don't know how loud yours is) for a few seconds while the turbo slows down, but I can only hear it in a quiet garage, not outside. I am just running it as-is and hoping it is a non-issue. I took the whole thing apart and there is nothing contacting the housings anywhere, it's coming from the center section.

it is FINE. Metal expands and contracts and so do jewses that flow in the turbie.

It is just your car's way of telling you, "damn that was a good drive now gimme a cigarette"

My only worry with that explanation is that I wasn't running the **** out of it. I only got on it once in the 10 minute drive and I wasn't even using full boost through all the gears.

Alright already. I changed my tampon and cleaned the sand outta my vag. It does seem that the cold weather we've been having has caused the sound to stop and all other vitals are good and nothing seems out of the ordinary. So, I gladly stand corrected.

My turbo emits a tea pot whistle after I shut it off. Or a "woot woot!"
