If I was to spray some degreaser or brake cleaner or simple green or anything like that, would it harm the turbo if it got on the inside? Thanks

 

inside the chra, or just inside the housings? I've sprayed down turbos, and everything else with brake cleaner before with now problems. I would avoid spraying inside the chra unless I had the turbo completely disassembled though.

 

I've sprayed mine with engine degreaser and choke cleaner.

good time to take a wire brush to it and polish the housing as well.

he said wire brush but no why would it matter so long as it isn't gauged it should work fine all polishing is, is replacing big scratches with a whole lot of little ones.

no I have three or four wire wheels on that I throw on my drill bit. Then I hit it with a bit of high grit sandpaper or steel wool, then hit it with a polishing wheel. I dont get it perfect, but it's better than as is.

Since my turbo is off right now, I wen tback over it....here's how it looked before:

Thats pretty clean. Ill do mine to othen. But while its all assembled.

I don't think you'll harm any of the metal components of the turbo, but there are some rubber seals on the compressor side of some turbo's that may react badly to certain solvents.

I use a Dremel polish wheel on pretty much everything that goes on my car if it's feasible. No reason some metal polish and steel wool can't be used.

If you're interested in "blasting" out the water/oil channels inside the CHRA, I'd think you could use just about anything you wanted. Engine degreaser, brake cleaner, paint stripper, carb cleaner... maybe just pour a bottle of Seafoam into some tupperware and submerge the thing overnight.

this is as of this morning. I threw a pic of the wire wheel I've been using. Then I hit it with a polishing wheel with the same drill. It's not the best, or spins fast enough, but it looks pretty good. Notice the pic below ---V see the back half of the housing, mine pretty much had that rough surface throughout....it's all about making it smooth.



the rest just got a good hit with engine degreaser and a rag. Just remeber, when you reinstall, the smoke is normal...it's all the residue burning off :gay:
