Trying to figure what the right pump would be for a '2000 NB1 for E85 conversion. A bit confusing, so looking for clarifications:

- Prefer Walbro over DeatschWerks​ just for hearsay reasons. Am I wrong on this?
- Walbro 190 should work
- There is Walbro GS242 and Walbro F20000141. Can't figure what the difference is
- Some sell "install kits", like https://5xracing.com/i-23034745-walb...%26go%3DSearch Looks fine, but Im told that it's critical to use an OEM "sock" and I doubt these kits have it.

So, edumacate me on the pumps, please?

 

Buy the kit that you linked to in your post. That's the one you want for a Walbro 190 HP and that is the sock that you want.

What I don't get is that the first one has F20000141 pump and the second has a GSS250 pump with the same install kit. So, what's the difference between them? Nobody seems to know.

Also ordered a stock sock from Mazda.

 

I believe the one you got is the Walbro 190 and the one that 5xRacing has for sale is the Walbro 190HP which stands for "high pressure". It has the ability to flow more fuel at higher pressures but they are pretty much the same up until you get past 50PSI of fuel pressure. On an N/A application you will not notice the difference. Also you did not need the stock sock from Mazda. The install kit that 5x provides has everything you need. Not sure why you asked if you just wanted to find out the hard way regardless.

 

I asked because I do not see a clear description of the at least 4 available p/ns for 190 pumps. Your explanation about 190 vs 190HP makes perfect sense and I do not need a 190HP, so would be fine with the one I've ordered.

As far as the sock I've been told by numerous people that aftermarket socks do not work. So I'll used the wiring and hardware from the kit and the stock sock. It was expensive, but hopefully will prevent E85 not being picked up from the bottom of the tank in an autocross car.

The reason people say that all aftermarket fuel socks will not work is because they are not angled so they don't sit flat at the bottom of the tank. If you'll look at the picture of the install kit, it comes with a fuel sock that is properly angled. If people are telling you ONLY oem will work, they've never used one of the Walbro install kits for the Miata before. I'm using the 5x 190hp kit exactly how it came, and the car won't fuel starve until there's only about a gallon left in the tank.

 

Thanks for the datapoint! However, we do run with about 2 gallons of fuel in the tank to begin an event and there's usually much less than a gallon at the end of the event. Especially if we get 8-10 runs locally.

We'll look at the socks side by side when the pump/install kit and OEM sock show up and see how similar they are angle-wise. Can always send the OEM sock back if not needed. Now I need to figure an easy way to drain fuel from the car as I'm planning to store it with pump gas for the winter and run E85 during the autocross season.
