1990 1.6 in meet of a turbo kit
I have a TD04 that I picked up cheap. At the time Kraken still had kits for the TD04, but no longer does. Is there a kit that is as complete as a Kraken setup that will work for my car and a TD04? Or should I give up on the TD04?
The reason I selected the TD04 was because of the completeness of the Kraken kit and the fact that it would max out right at the limits of my stock engine internals. I’ve upgraded my drive shaft, axles, and diff (Torsen limited slip). I have a Supermiata radiator and re-route (not yet installed). I have no desire to make more power than my stock motor can handle. I’m just wanting a fun car for the local mountains. Thanks for your time and advice.
A good friend drove my car and said, “Man it’s slow… I mean you wish it would go faster and eventually it does”. He’s not wrong.

Bofi G19 manifold and downpipe for £745.00 (roughly $950 USD + tax and all that fun stuff). It is only a 2.5" downpipe, but it'll be sufficient for your goals.

Personally, no. However, Bofi is pretty much the top dog when it comes to turbo Miata parts in the UK, so I'm pretty confident it would be good quality. In terms of fitment, the site says "Please note 01-05 USDM cars use NB 98-00 downpipes" which makes me think that all years except the 01-05 years should fit on USDM cars without any modifications. I'd send them an email to confirm it though. They've responded very quickly to one of my inquiries about their Pulsar G25-550 turbo.
I haven’t installed my kit yet, but Kraken made me reasonable enough deal on a full kit with a brand new 2554r… so I went for it. I think it will make for a super fun car here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I can’t wait to get the car turbocharged and dialed in.
Just a tip, that thing is going to spool quick and hard. Be careful running a MBC with that turbo on stock rods because it could easily boost spike and make wwayyyyy too much torque. I'd suggest what I did, keep it on wastegate until you get the tune happy, then get an EBC solenoid to ramp the boost in and raise the boost from 5500 to redline (after peak torque is well past).

Thanks for the advice. I’m also porting the waste gate before I install everything as well. I’m hoping that will minimize boost creep as well. I’m not really going for maxing out the power. Rather, I’m hoping to tune it so it drive just like when naturally aspirated… just with more power and torque. I have a very good friend who’s 99 has been turbocharged for about 50k miles and he did the tuning. He’ll be tuning my car and he is a retired engineer who builds in several safeties with his tunes. I believe he starts with wastegate and then adds EBC as you suggest.
Thanks again
