Default Beginner turbo install

Hi from Bristol, England.

My son has a 2002, 2.5 1.8vvt. We are looking to do a turbo project together so my idea is to buy an engine we can work on together and swap it in to the car once done. There's a few engines for sale near us both 1.6 and 1.8vvt.

Which one would work better for a turbo kit?

Someone said to use a 1.8vvt head on a non vvt bottom end, does that work?

I have a little bit of experience with older engines but never done anything like this, looking forward to it.

Any help really appreciated.

I would turbo the engine in the car, while building a vvt motor. You'll have all the bugs worked out.

1.8 blocks are pretty similar to each other. The major difference is the VVT uses a higher volume oil pump.
