I'm in the middle of collecting parts for my turbo build on my 1.8 2000 miata.

I bought a t25 gt2552 hybrid turbo (high flow billet wheel) . I was hoping for 220bhp or so with instant spool.

I can't find any information on this turbo being used on a 1.8 but I've seen some people saying the gt2554r is too small for 1.8.

I'm not familiar with a 2552. The 2554 is a little small for a 1.8. It tends to be restrictive on the top end and smaller turbos generally create more heat than larger turbos at the same power levels. Additional IAT heat means additional potential for detonation and will keep you from running as much spark advance as would be optimal.

If it is a track only car, why would you want low RPM responsiveness out of the turbo? If you are at wide open throttle on the track and are at less than 4,000 RPMs you probably should have downshifted.

One has to push a 2554 pretty hard to get 220 wheel out of it. Again, I don't know the 2552.

I know everyone is different and wants different things out of their car. Those are just my thoughts.

 

I would not go with less than a GT2560.

 

2560 track guy here as well. At 17psi (270whp on 91oct) my turbo spools next to instantly on track anywhere above 4k rpm. Above that (basically the entire time you're driving), no lag at all. Any lag if I'm deliberately not downshifting (keeping rpm a little above 4k) is basically imperceptible, and it doesn't change how I drive.

At 9psi (220whp on 91oct, 245whp on e85), the turbo spools instantly. There's no lag. I'm only one guy, but from my experience, the 2554 seems very niche. Seems it would make a nice fit for a 1.6 street car if one didn't want to downshift to pass folks on the highway.

Oh hell yeah dude! Nobody here is gonna blast you for posting an Exocet. That thing’s gonna be a menace on track with 200+whp (and I’m sure it already is).

 

I run a remote mount pulsar 2860R at only 190whp and it's great. Spools fast on track, produces very little heat (relatively), and makes all the noises. I tried going the small route first (GBC20-300) and all it did was take more boost to make same HP and create tons of heat.

 

@cabowabo I can't believe you're only at 190 HP. I've watched your onboards and the car looks/sounds insane. Big ups to you
