I've been reading the DIY FAQ and I'm figuring I will get the Walbro 190HP pump for my install as I'm not using an aftermarket ECU and I probably won't swap the injectors and I'll probably want to turn up the boost at some point.

Question is though which one on the Lightning Motorsports site to get? The FAQ indicates the 94-97 kit, but it seems like that might have been written a while back and now I'm seeing a 90-93 kit on the site that has a link referring back to the DIY FAQ with this note "Please NOTE that some minor modifications will be required for this kit to work, please visit Miata Turbo.net for more details."

So, is it the 90-93 kit or the 94-97 kit? And what "minor modifications" are required to make the pump work? I caught the pump install instructions in the archives, does that cover the modifications?

 

they are both the same. i believe a few of us here emailed them asking to change it from just 94-97 to 90-97.

 

There's a little "funnel" on the 90-93 that must be sliced off to fit the 94-97 style pump. Not hard if you have a dremel and a cutoff wheel.

They probably don't want to change it to 90-97 unless it's completely bolt-on, because they'll get a whole bunch of phone calls from confused customers.

I thought the inline pumps were the way to go? I would rather have an intank pump myself. What is the better pump?

 

I'm going to use a '89 Corvette pump because:
1- Autozone has it
2- It's $75
3- It supports high HP levels. 400+
4- It fits.
5- It's not what everyone else is using.

Yup. BBK Fuel Pumps for 5.0 Fox Body Mustangs work too. But not as cheap : /

The in-tank is cheaper and eaiser.

I went the Pierburg route as I kept hearing how great and reliable they are. If I had done it again, I'd do the walbro hands-down. 15-30min install vs. crawling under the car for 1-2hr.

 

Well I got the Walbro 190HP with kit from Lightning. Figure it can't hurt as my stock pump has 193k on it.

if there is a great cheap pump that works for 80% of the members here, why save $10 to try something else?!

 

no dammit just buy a normal 190lph high pressure and be done with it, if PNP is your ordeal then do what we tell you how hard is that to understand. Pioneers and people who know what they are doing and, don't need our opinion are on there own, and will need to test and evaluate the material for themselves. geez

Still gathering pieces and parts. Install will most likely take place in a few weeks when I have time and a friend can give me a hand with it.

As more time elapses I keep dumping more stock kit things and buying upgrades.

Probably only looking to do 5psi to start and then later when I change out the clutch I'll start pushing more.
