I noticed lately that my engine bay seem a bit louder and at full boost i use to hit 6-6.5 to redline, but today it would drop to 4-5 at redline. I took off the heatshield to give the lookever and doesn't seem to be any cracks. My uncle told me that putting soapy water on the manifold when its cold will let me know if theres a leak or not. Truth to this? Does it sound like a case of a manifold crack? I do have relief cuts.


This started to happen after my trip back from MATG.

 

yeah it should bubble if there is....just make sure that **** is COLD when you do it.

easier tool is a section of garden hose to your ear.

 

LOL, it's amazing how many retards I see put hot water on a cold window and are shocked when it spiderwebs. Simple thermal dynamics folks, an ice cube cracks when it hits your drink for a reason.

 

How many have you seen do this?

FWIW, I regularly put luke warm water on a frosty windsheild.

 

this winter my windshield cracked when i turned my defrosters on...shot up straight....that afternoon when i drove it again and turned them on again, the crack immediatly shot across the entire windsheild....

 

Its not thermodynamics. Its the ideal gas law or mechanics of materials

What the next procedure/step will i have to take? never worked on a turbo kit before.

remove the rest, and the DP...pull the turbo.

you should have enough sticking up that you can get a vice grip on it and remove it....or at wors you'll have to extract it the hard way.

this is a good time to upgrade to studs...

 

If they aren't broken off flush with the flange you will probably be ok. If not, prepare to spend a couple of bucks at a machine shop to have them extracted. Been there done that. If you have to go to a machine ship have them drill and tap for bigger studs. I know for a fact that 3/8" are about the largest you'll be able to fit in there.

 

Looking at the stud, it doesn't seem to be sticking up ...so whats the hard way?

and where would one get studs, sizes, metric...etc.etc

 

mcmaster.com is a good and cheap location for studs. I recommend using a map propane torch to heat the area up a bit when trying an "ex out" extractor on them. Just be careful not to heat them up too much or you risk taking the aluminum threads out with the stud.

 

Remove manifold and take it to a machine shop. Have them remove it. don't be cheap and try to use an easy out or drill it out yourself, you'll just **** it up more and cost more $$$ when you eventually go to a machine shop with a drill bit or easy out stuffed in there.

If you get everything redrilled for 3/8" you can use regular exhaust studs which should be avalible at any decent autoparts store.

Cost me $200cnd to get mine fixed and re-tapped. Keeping in mind that the previous owner had attempted to drill one out himself and royally fucked everything up.

Definitely the best reason for the greddy guys to upgrade to more quality 10.9 grade hardware. If you have some stick out you could also weld a nut to the stud to get it out as well.
Hope like hell you don't have to use an easyout, they suck.

 

Aluminium threads out of what? The manifold is cast iron.

 

Taking it to the machine shop this monday. Once done, i'll have to source 10.9 grade hardware locally. So if I go to a hardware store and mentioni 10.9, they should know what im talking about and not give me the WTF is this asian kid talking about right? lol

 

I think he means from the head itself. Also you want heat treated studs mine where 2.50 apeice but well worth it.

 

Last night i sprayed penetrating lubricant to make the work easier this nice burning morning. After 1 hour of meticulous, slow working on my part while working the bolts and spraying lubricant i managed to take off the manifold(no broken bolts) but in the process break off the remaining 2 bolts that hold the turbo to the mani.

Heading over to the machine shop and dropping off the manifold. Ace's Hardware after, but wanted to know how long are the turbo manifold bolts themselves? (10.9 hardware, correct? )

Side question? Is there anything that you can prep and paint the greddy manifold to keep it in better looking shape?? Every used kit I have seen looks all burnt rusted from the heat. Ceramic coating??

ZOMG! Nice, I replaced all those bolts with studs from day one myself, but I know that won't stop Godzilla from breaking my stuff.

Not so much anymore, I'm either sleeping while people leave for work or I leave before them nowadays. When I was in college I saw it quite a bit and I would just snicker waiting for the giant ice cube sound.

 

The machine shop is busy so i'll be able to pick it up friday or early monday. Does anybody know what kind of measurements i'll need to get replacement (10.9 hardware) studs (length/pitch?)
