guy with a FM kit on a 99 had this happen to him yesterday at an autox. im not sure on his exact setup tho. the car has seen A LOT of time eating cones, usually sets FTD.
I'd say the FM kits don't put down enough power to be breaking trans gears unless you drive it like a ******* moron. I got 2 words for that guy.
Learn to ******* shift.
Learn to ******* shift.
It is more than likely going break other stuff first if power was in question.
Seems more like as mentioned, missed shift.
But we all know it is easier to blame the car instead of the driver...

AFAIK the transmission IS the weak link in the driveline (with a 1.8 rear in the line up). Add to that a big clutch upgrade and a driver who consistent dumps the clutch (at a stop and at speed) and I can see that happening regularly. Figure the Miata trans wasn't designed to manage nearly the amount of torque these turbo kits are throwing at it. And then the abuse just amplifies the duty. Fortunately Miata transmissions are relatively cheap and plentiful.

yeah, well the owner of the car has a lot of different co-drivers. he is actually a very good driver, doubt it was all him. but like m2cupcar said, can always pick up another trans if need be
I know many competitive auto-xers carry spare transmissions with them to out of town events. My trailer was specially modified to remove transmissions from Miata's for that reason. haha
Yep- when you pull slack out of the driveline with high lock up clutches and removing those soft diff bushings, something's gotta absorb the shock. The Miata trans/gears are tiny and do amazingly well IMO for what kind of power they stand up to. I don't doubt that my clutch (which is like an on/off switch) played a role in the death of my first trans.
