Minecraft
Who's heard of it or played it? This game is wasting hours of my time a day now.
"Minecraft is a sandbox construction game created by Markus Persson and is currently in pre release alpha. Minecraft development started around the 10th of May 2009, pre-orders for the full game started being accepted on the 13th of June.
The game involves players creating and destroying various types of blocks in a three dimensional environment. The player takes an avatar that can destroy or create blocks, forming fantastic structures, creations and artwork across the various multiplayer servers in multiple game modes."

Here's your procedurally generated, on the fly, (bigger than) earth. And to think that there is a huge network of caves and dungeons to explore underneath all that landscape. This can keep on going till your hard drive fills up with data. Outdoor lava flow spotted at 2:44.

Yeah, it's not exactly on-board graphics card friendly. Although it plays pretty well on a laptop that I'm repairing with a geforce go 7200 (basically a desktop 6200) so it's not too demanding. Just watch out for those intel graphics chipsets.
Right now the guy is adding multiple new features every week. Just last week he added minecarts that you can ride in and dungeons with hidden loot.
Purchasing it costs 10 euro or $15. He's been selling since June last year. He could be swimming in money right now if taxes weren't so high in Sweden.

Minecraft is currently free to play the alpha, survival multiplayer version! This is due to overloaded servers after the latest popularity boom.
Paypal doesn't like him. They locked his account at $768,000...

Minecraft has logic programming in game using special red dust. It's one part I have yet to delve into, but the results are pretty cool.

EE's would appreciate this.
Imagine the possibilities.
I'll host an always-up server when my replacement video card comes back in the mail.

It's basically a huge world which auto generates as you move towards the edges. The worlds can get gigantic taking ages to travel. Some of the generated landscapes are pretty awesome looking too. The idea is to survive the night on the first day since monsters spawn at night and in dark places. You dig down or explore cave systems to find resources which you can use to craft items. There's a bunch of different block types to build with and apparently you can build rudimentary computers with the redstone system. Some people make gigantic quarries and structures. Multiplayer is still a little buggy but it's available for play right now and features are gradually being added. The developer recently made a trip to Valve I think so there may be some developments there.
