I am looking at getting an EMS4 since I cna get a great deal on it. The only thing that I dont know about is setting up the EMS to controll the alternator.

What are you all doing to get the EMS or EMS 4 to run the alternator?

Most people that have DIYed their Megasquirts use a circuit designed by JasonC SBB. My own Megasquirts have a digital control circuit that does the same thing, with some additional features like a smart battery light.

 

I just switched to an old style alternator after failing to get the PWM signal right and getting tired of messing with it. I'm happy, and I have an extra PWM output now.

 

How hard was the swap to the old alternator? What had to be done?

1. Find a 95-97 alternator.
2. Install.
3. Snip one wire in your harness.
4. ???
5. Profit.

I'd have to see my diagram, but I think the only wire that matters is the Ign+. You snip the wire that goes to the ECU. And I don't believe I connected the last one either (warning light?).

 

there's a diagram floating around. I think leatherface25 posted a thread about it maybe levnubhin.

 

I installed a 1.8 na alternator this last weekend when I installed my EMS 4. A PNP harness was made. Only what I needed to run the EMS is connected. Will I still haev to cut the wire? I am having some power feedback issues.

good to know, didn't realize the 95 to 97 didn't need that circuit.

 

 

Has anyone gotten their ems4 and left the stock ecu in with connections to the alternator? I tried but I have a battery light and it only seems to charge very slowly while the car is parked...maybe because the factory ecu can't see engine speed anymore..
I know adaptronic did this so I know it's possible.

 

The only problem with doing this is your factory ECU needs to see engine speed and things get a bit sketchy splitting your Crank and Cam signals between EMS4 and your factory ECU.

We've done it using a schottky diode (similar to the circuit Adaptronic uses) but in all honesty it's cake to just use the NA alternator.

 

Also, wasn't somebody saying that a Toyota MR2 alt was 120 amps and a direct bolt-in? If yer gonna hafta buy one .........
