the other day i tried starting my car and after about 5 minutes of idling some white or bluish smoking starting coming out of the exhaust, also the car started to overheat out of no where. And there is a lot of fuel coming out of the tail pipe. i was trying to set base timing on a new mspnp when all this happened but i had not started doing anything yet. could the headgasket have fried in this short period of overheating??? any input will be helpful.

My hypothesis:

-Head gasket is toast
-Fuel isnt burning because the spark plugs are friggin covered in crap from the head gasket
- MSPNP is trying to fix what is broken because its seeing something fugged up and delivering a **** load of fuel
-you're in a world of hurt.

 

so basically what should I do, is there anything I can do? Should I remove the head for the head gasket?

 

yeah you need a new head gasket. Might wanna change the plugs and check the oil

What everyone has already said is a pretty good assessment. I wouldn't be too worried though, changing the headgasket is pretty straight forward in these cars unless you have something dumb like a seized up nut on the exhaust. Go slow, be precise. Ball hard

Yeah......make sure the engine is cold or you'll be stripping every single bolt

 

Check your plugs first off, what do they look like? Don't go ripping your head off quite yet, bad plug wire(s)? Bad coil? Spark confirmed on all 4 cylinders? Oil in your coolant? Coolant in your oil? With the engine running but not hot, do you get bubbles in your radiator? I'm fighting an issue that sounds exactly like this but I'm 99.44% sure mine is a fuel injector issue. Lots of things to check before you rip the head off.

 

Heres the problems with this, fuel makes a black smoke when its dumping into the engine, a bad injector wouldnt cause white or blue smoke, and not all the time will a radiator bubble if there is a bad head gasket. Oil and coolant can also come from a bad turbo seal(oil only), cracked head, cracked block (the worst), and bad piston rings (oil only)

 

I once had a Bosch K-Jetronic Mercedes that ran so rich that the oil became diluted with fuel. When this happened, the engine puffed white/blue smoke from the exhaust. Fixed the injection and changed the oil and everything was fine. So, in an extreme case, it is possible to run rich and get white/blue smoke.

The spark plugs will tell the tale. What do they look like? Head gasket remains likely, but your plugs will tell you a lot and are easy to pull.

A large abundance of fuel in your exhaust system can absolutely cause white smoke, I've seen it several times. I had a coil go bad in my miata which lead to only two cylinders firing and dumping the fuel out the tailpipe in the form of a white fog. It occurs most often when the fuel doesn't even burn, but gets vaporized after dumping out.
