Going Quaife - slavage broken 5spd as donor?
So, with the new engine putting our plenty oomph, I broke my 5spd within 1,5hrs on a local track.
I don't need this again, I hate reliability issues like this so i may as well save up for a Quaife gear set.
Quaife UK still has some sets in stock (it seems the don't make them new anymore) but only the short ratio version.
With my 4.1 rear end I will loose some top end it seems, but that is another issue (that can be resolved by going with a 3.636 rear)
Onto the Quaife: should I find a new NB low milage donor or can I salvage my broken 5 spead as donor for the Quaife gear set?

Also interested in Hustler's possibly-massively-exaggerated-for-interweb-brownie-points Quaife shenanigans. Quaife is a UK company, and as I'm from Team UK, it is relevant to my interests.
I believe Hustler had a bad experience with Quaife on one of his VW's.
Actually, there seems to be a 6 speed available somewhere. What do I need to get the car running except the 6 speed itself? Anything else needs changing on the car? Don't care about speedo.
Bolts right up. If you care about neutral switch and reverse lights, hook them up. If you don't, well don't
The starter motor will be held on with 2 bolts instead of 3, or swap to an NB starter motor and save some pounds at the same time.

Someone should probably also mention that the 6 speed is geared lower than the 5. Expect to swap to a 3.9 rear if you want comparable top gear revs to the 5 speed (assuming you now have a 4.3 in there). Alternatively, you can make some money on the side pulling out tree stumps using first and second gear. Use the tree money to buy a 3.6 ring and pinion.
^It was mentioned, however I like the way you put it better.
Everyone always goes to the tree puller comments. I really, really wanna see a Miata chained to a tree. If that's not enough, I wanna see it pull a tree out no matter what the size is. lol

I bought a NB starter when my 99 engine was going in - but it was the same as the old one. Pics of NA vs NB starter?
Not sure about the gearing, but the Quaife is close ratio too so I may end up with a 3.9 or 3.6 rear anyway. I've got the 1.8 default 4.1 right now.
The 6-speed locally will cost me $900 plus labour. The Quaife will cost me $2300 plus labour plus labour getting the gear set in a donor.
Will my 300lbft kill a 6 speed?
