I cleaned out my HLAs long ago. Took them apart, gave them a good cleaning, put them back together, reinstalled. Took about an hour and a half being the first time I had really ever messed with a head in my life.

End result: I have no idea - I bought a solid-lifter head for a 2000 and used the HLA head as partial payment before it was ever reinstalled.

 

I am not sure if that piece is actually supposed to come out. I have never pulled it on any of the lifters that I have cleaned. I might honestly look into getting a replacement lifter. I know you can pick up the kia branded ones for less then $10.

 

I've taken the plungers out before, not sure on the disc looking thingy. For ~$10 I'd replace 'em.
