I searched and found where a lot of people have had this issue on Mnet but no one has written it up. I have a 120+ page manual for rebuilding the 6 speed, but all I want to know is how to fix it when someone pulls the wrong bolt as a drain plug.

 

You disassemble the entire transmission, put the plug back in, and reassemble it, IIRC.

 

But that is NOT what I WANT to hear!

 

Unfortunately that is the only way

 

Disassemble it and return the counter lever to the correct position over the retaining bolt. It is really easy if you have a friend who has pulled apart any transmission before. You do need at least two people to put the guts back into the case, three preferred.

Don't drive it that way, there are big metal things loose inside the case now.


I have a spare MSM trans I am about to sell if you are into that kind of thing.

 

It is out of the car so no worries there. I was selling it for $500 thinking it was only going to cost $50 to fix. The tranny guy wants $150-200 to fix it and that leaves me too little for a good 6spd. If it wasn't too complicated I would do it myself but I am really not comfortable. I drove the car home with it like that, the PO drove it some as well. The car drove fine and you would never know there was a time bomb beside you....

$150-200 is really cheap. You should take that and run.

Yeah, for $200 he will check and replace any synchros that may need it. I may go that route but then I will want $650 for mine as well. I have someone wanting it for the $500 now but they won't pay more even if it is gone through and basically rebuilt. I don't need it so I am not in a hurry to spend money on it. Oh well. GLWS on yours.

 

$200 is extremely cheap for transmission R&R labor.

 

Have the transmission guy replace the synchros weather they need it or not, and you can list it for sale as a "rebuilt 6 speed tranny with zero miles since full rebuild with new synchros" and get $700 to $800 for it.

I will see what that costs. Savington I had no idea what it cost to have a tranny pulled apart. Thanks for the input because I considered calling around....lol. I really didn't know if that was a good price or not. Of course the trans is already out of the car so he won't have to mess with any of that, just the rebuild.

 

I need a transmission guy that will do that sort of work for that money. I'd send him Christmas cards and a 6 pack of craft beer every holiday season.

 

He said for a basic rebuild on a 5 spd for me would be $75.....I find him parts from time to time and really had no idea that he was giving me a great price. Guess I will need to show him some gratitude when he does the repair....

We charge a minimum of $500 at the shop to tear down and rebuild a trans, plus parts. You are definitely getting a deal if he knows what he's doing.
