We were at the track for Miata Cup Challenge first event Saturday running NT01 on 15x9 6UL and my friend had a set of RC1 on 15x9 Advanti.

Wanted to compare so we switch wheels and tires for the 3rd session. I had to stop early because of a strange noise, front left wheel had 3 backed out lugnuts (949 torque to 80lbs/ft). In fact, all the lugs except on 1 wheel we're loose (could remove them with your fingers...)

 

Your post is cut-off. You said backed-out studs?!? Or did you mean the lug nuts were loosening themselves?

Was this the very first time the wheels were used on track?
Were they torqued when the wheels were hot, just off the track, or cold after sitting in the pits a while?

 

4 track days on Dial Ins with 949 lugs, none have ever worked loose. They are installed and torqued to 80 ft-lbs at home the day before, next morning before the 1st session, and before each subsequent session after the car has had a chance to cool off. I'll see at most a 1/16th of a revolution when re-torquing between sessions.

Are you certain the socket isn't binding against the wheel giving false torque values? These wheels have very little clearance for lug nuts and a slim socket is required.

Sounds like user error in this case. We sell lots of those wheels and 949 lugs daily...never heard of a problem like this before.

 

Any brand new alloy wheel when used on track will radically loosen it's alloy lugs it's first session. Like finger tight sometimes. After that first session you're fine. Check torque with wheel as cold as possible. IOW, just before you go out, not right when you come off track. If you have to torque with wheels/lugs screaming hot, add another 15 lbs. In the Thunderhill 25 hrs, our hot tire changes would get cold lugs onto a screaming hot wheel then impact gunned on at about 100 lbs. Never an issue in 100+ tire changes.

To remind myself (no crew), I put the torque wrench in the drivers seat or base of the windshield in front of driver.

 

my friend runs that combination on a his MSM that we autoX. No problems. We do always check them though.

 

Whatever, don't like them... buy 6UL or die Don't understand why you torque them at 110, did you do that with my wheels too ?

Not their first time, wheels we're cold after sitting for more then 30 minutes. The only thing I see is that SirCharles torque them down to 110# on his MR-S and I did 80# on my Miata.

Go to 9:00 for the noise... and don't see my spin in warmup lap...

We always use 85lbs

 

Will use 85# from now on and my 6UL only...

The cone lenght on your lugs is almost double then standard tuner lugs, don't know if that could affect something. I do have TSE 5mm spacer in front for brake clearance, don't kow if this could interfer while torquing the wheels..

I always double torque (2 clicks per lug nuts) to avoid this kind of error.

 

Joyrider, we both used my torque wrench set at 85...

Also, I used 949 nuts last year with these wheels and didn't have that problem


Maybe it's the mechanic who installed the wheels....ahahahahahah
