elesjuan's mediocre 95 Miata adventure (google fiber edition)

Hey all! It's been a while since I've had time to post much about progress on my car and a lot has happened over the last couple years. Scored a new gig with a large national financial institution, nearly made the biggest mistake of my life (marriage), bought/fixed/flipped my very first house and still managed to find time to turbo my mediocre miata! For some reason I can't seem to find my original "build" thread so here we go! This will be more fun anyway!

July 4th 2004 my best friend and I test drove and bought his very first miata, which was the first I had ever driven. Knew right then I needed one so the hunt begins! Come to find out, my brother worked with a guy who recently bought an RX8 to replace his shiny red "garage kept" 1995 Miata which he was the 2nd owner of. Test drove and purchased my very first miata soon after from the co-worker with big dreams and grand plans. Fast forward a number of years, what was originally intended to be a daily driver turned yard ornament and now weekend playtoy. Much has changed and it's been a long, long process.

First day / Current day:

First engine died from lack of maintenance, so I had to concoct together an Escort GT engine with whatever RWD miata parts I could find laying around.

That engine ran really well, so let's wreck it. Picked up a deal on a Jackson Racing Supercharger and promptly installed it. Car was crazy. Insane. 160rwhp even! Honestly, it ran real strong on megasquirt and I was rather satisfied with the result. Rocking my wagon wheels and the old FM FMIC:

Rekt:

After blowing up my motor with a Jackson Racing S/C and it's 160whp of glory, I managed to soore an engine in really good condition from FRT_FUN when my friend bought his 2000 Miata. Waiting for the install I decided to delete the power steering and do a little cleanup work inside the car:

Cylinder head with less than 25k miles on it and all teh exhaust valves are leaking. Boost Juice gave me some ideas in another one of my terribad threads to clean the carbon off so I could at least get a little bit of time out of the head. Motor assembly started with my "custom" coolant reroute and plumbing for turbo:

This particular motor ran awful strong and I was quite satisfied with it. 99 6 speed and 4.10 gears, it was quicker than the 2000 6 speed miata with intake/header/racing beat exhaust that my friend bought from FRT_FUN! Let's wreck it, I mean Turbo it!

Sometime around a year later I found a shity SS AutoChrome manifold and downpipe on Craigslist for $40 so I figured WTF, why not? Much like my previous endeavors I rushed through the fabrication required to complete the install without double checking things like the wastegate reference line condition / location, and ensuring overboost protection is enabled. Completed the install July 5th 2013 and by July 8th the motor had blown apart. Boost reference line from the wastegate burst and went full bore. Got 4 full gears at >23psi before the number 2 rod exploded and wrecked the motor.

All installed the day before it blew up:

Data log from the end: (Note: I have a 250kpa map sensor)

Interesting part I found on the street. Wonder where this came from?

Rekt:

I've got a welder, some JB weld, and nothing to lose. Took a 1" holesaw to the Escort GT Block and obtained a plug then welded it up!!

Found this big crack next to number 1, so we'll repair it properly. JB Weld:

Installed the motor, started it up and laughed manically. Backed out of the driveway and got 20 feet down the block when it started knocking. Come to find out, I neglected to torque one of the rod bearing caps. Sad, as it would've been EPIC. Threw it in the trash instead.

****. Not sure what to do now, I decided to put the miata on the backburner and work on the house I just bought to fix and flip. Rekt:

UnRekt:

Winter 2013 I get a phone call from Andy after the first precipitation. He saw some guy standing on the side of the interstate looking at his 1999 miata, so he pulled over to see if he could help. Guy was running around on bald tires and lost control running his car into the back of a semi trailer. I ended up buying that car for $750 and parted it out. Repair estimate was $8900. Rekt:

Motor had 110k miles and made a quick rod knock sound loading it onto my trailer, so I decided to replace the bearings and check clearances. Slapped a newly rebuilt 99 head on and we're 100% good to go!

Picked up some new AEM Gauges and decided where I wanted to place them, then swapped out the 194 light bulbs with some white ultrabright LEDs:

Picked up one of those 5 panel road course mirrors and decided the interior didn't have enough of a dome light, so I went overboard as usual. Picked up 12 feet of strip LED from Amazon. You can find stuff in the car at night, now. Also installed my new seat belt, which was a mistake. 5 points on a street car is a terrible idea.

Finally wrapped up everything and threw the 5psi spring in my Tial 38mm wastegate. Took the car out and got her all tuned up, makes 12psi on a 5psi spring. That sounds about par for the course. Set overboost protection to 13psi and called it a day. After a few weeks of playing I ended up in a stoplight race with a 2014 "5.0" and wasted him. Badly. WTF?? Time to dyno:

Woah. 274rwhp and 225ftlbs on 12psi. Not bad considering I stole Hustler's timing table and street tuned it with TunerStudio.

Yeah, we're not done. Decided it was time to finally upgrade my steering wheel and pickup a quick release. Selected an NRG set that I particularly liked in leather and ordered away. Shortly after ordering the wheel I discovered the car had a hard time starting with the key switch, so I cleaned it up per a miata.net thread and still didn't fix. Ordered an S2000 starter button and replaced the cigar lighter.

Almost immediately after installing this manifold and turbo I discovered upper RPM low load and low throttle surging was pretty terrible, thn the manifold started to crack about every three weeks. After the 6th time it cracked I finally got tired of taking the **** off and welding it back up. What a shitty design. We need to do something about it.

We took an old manifold laying around and setup a jig. Obtained some new flanges, properly drilled then tack welded onto the jigs flanges and ordered a hand full of schedule 40 weld-els.

New manifold is a direct copy (turbo placement anyway) of the SS AutoShit manifold but it's bombproof. Problem is the pipe is so thick that it touches the water pump inlet line from the radiator, so had to cut this and rotate 45 degree then weld back together.

Tired of the shitty little mazda battery and scoring a free Optima red top only took a quick five minute modification to the tie down and we're in business:

Replaced my deceased CoolingMist water meth injection setup with a Devil's Own setup and we're done for now. Since starting this entire project I've put almost 20k miles on a T3/T4 Chinacharger and $8.00 worth of Dorman exhaust studs / copper lock nuts. Figure it's probably time for a little bit of abuse to this poor manifold. Retarded boost ignition timing back 7 degrees and found the biggest hill on any interstate I could find. Started at 2500rpm full throttle in 6th gear and took it far as I could. Eventually we'd like to market these manifolds in my area if we can find enough people to make it worth while. Production models will be stainless and probably coated with something to make them a little more.... pretty.

Near future upgrades will include a built motor using CP pistons, belfab rods, Supermiata damper, forged oil pump, MS3, and much.. MUCH more boost thanks to some E85. Next mod I have in mind is some TSE 11.75" wilwood front brakes. This bastard needs them!

I've encountered my first real problem since installing the manifold I built and it's not what I figured would happen. Over the course of 18 months I've removed and reinstalled the manifold and turbo pretty close to a half dozen times and my dorman studs and nuts are still holding strong!

Due to lack of room for the wastegate, we used some DOM pipe to sit the gate up next to the turbine housing which is attached to the manifold via a Vibrant V-Band clamp. Thus far I've killed 3 vibrant vband clamps. At first I suspected that they were over tightened when installed but I'm unable to find ANY torque or install specifications for these, so the second I rotated the wastegate pipe while tightening the clamp. Once I reached the point where the pipe wouldn't rotate, I gave the nut two full turns past it and that clamp lasted less than a week. ****.

Quick phone call to my brother who's a fabricator and he thinks the wastegate and pipe assembly is too much weight and the stress is too much for the clamp. Solution is simple; Build a bracket to brace the wastegate pipe to the manifold. Quick bracket, a couple tabs welded up and we're back in business!

This solution bought me three weeks until the brace tab weld broke off, then it killed the clamp. Dammit. At roughly $30 a clamp shipped, this is getting really expensive.

New solution involves the use of our brace and a better weld, along with a higher quality v-band clamp and flanges from Tial. This is two 38mm vband wastegate outlet flanges and a billet steel solid clamp. Hopefully this works?!

Now for the good news! For the last like 4 years I've been dealing with a TERRIBLE 60-70mph vibration. I'm talking a vibration bad enough that my air filter falls off the turbo and it renders all of my mirrors USELESS! Have checked out the drive shaft, axles, transmission, wheels/tires and was about to completely give up... until I noticed that vibration damper on the differential was loose. I'm talking spinning free loose! After some googling it looks like a lot of SPEC guys usually remove those but I don't really want to go through the hassle of setting the rear end up again and that leaves me only one choice. Cut it off.

3 hours of careful work with an angle grinder and my vibration is GONE!!!

One final thought.. GO ROYALS!!!!!!

I'm liking your NB HVAC controls. I've been putting off putting gauge in my car because I didn't want them mounted so low, but the extra NB controls I have laying around might save that. How much trouble were they to install?
