Motive video recently posted a video testing a number of different coil packs. Figured it would be something worth sharing with the community.

Really cool video, as an electrical engineer I can also approve their testing method. Just testing the primary current is just a small part of the equation.
I asked them if they want to share the dwell settings for each coil, would be cool if they could share that (but at the same time I understand if they would not).

 

I've been hearing the IGN-1A coils are the golden coils but at $71 a coil, it's hard to bite the bullet.

 

I upgraded from the GM D585 coils to the ING 1a coils over the winter. It was well worth it in my application. Fixed all the spark blow out issues we were having and I'm not having to put freshly gapped plugs in the car ever couple events. Also found repeatable power in the higher RPM range over the D585s. Amazing coilpack.

 

Here in Europe the Audi R8/VAG Coils are very popular.

You can buy a set of new ones for like 80€. A new set of plugs and wires is around 25€, hard to beat for the performance.

The big PLUS is, that they fit amazing without any kind of holding bracket or screws, just click in like stock, if you cut the rubber just a bit.

 

Indeed, they are cheap and genuine R8 ones are dead reliable. They also grab on the spark plug, so no need to machine a bracket, but a cylindrical spacer might be nice to keep them snug in the VC and avoid water ingress (I like washing my engine). However there are no wiring diagrams for these on a Miata as far as I could tell.

I'm scared of wiring jobs, but i got it all working on my first try. Really easy to setup, no pull up needed. (Euro 95.5, 1.6 stock harness)

 

Der vierte: what plugs are you using, something normal like BK7RE? Did you get the connectors that plug into the coils and make a harness? Do you have a part number or spec for the connector?

A pic of your setup would be great. I like this idea a lot more than dealing with mounting the 585's.

They will clip on BKR7Es no problem.

 

No S2000/K20 coils in that test, I wonder why.

 

Yes, I use normal BKR7E.
The connectors for the coils: Search "1J0973724" on e*** or just type in "ignition coil connector audi", 5-10 dollars from china

I can look after the exact part number for the coils i have, but every 06E905115 coil should work.
There is a rubber part under the casing that you can cut down a bit, that gives you a good sealing and solid connection to the plug. At least mine were like this, they can differ!
