Info on older SC unit
 

I found a 99 Mazda Miata engine for sale. This engine has a Whipple Charger bolted on it and I would like to find out more about it since the present owned was not much help, he bought the car for parts. Please see photo attachments.

1. Does anyone recognize it, the model, how old and is there a manual available online or hard copy?
2. This engine has been sitting for 4 yrs. Is this a concern for the sc unit, what maintenance will be required?
3. The engine came out of a wrack. The bottom poly on the crank was damaged during the impact. I didn’t see it, it’s not on it, but the engine poly looks fine (see photo marked w/red arrow). Is a replacement poly available?
4. No ECU on it. Can a standalone unit like Megasquirt, etc do this? No Cam Position Sensor, did the car run like that through whatever was controlling ignition? Boost control, and many other questions on what to do before firing it up.
I have no experience with FI engines. Can anyone help????

Unless you're getting it for next to nothing I don't think that's too great of a starting point when you don't know anything about the internals of the engine. To return it to stock you're probably looking at around 300$, to get it running with the supercharger you're probably going to break 800$ if you don't already have a standalone to run it with. Just based on the hole drilled in the valve cover it looks like they used a trigger off of the front of the intake camshaft to replace the CAS.

The issue is that you've no idea if they've been running it super lean or over 7,500 rpm for an extended time so you don't know if the engine's already at the end of its life.

All he could tell me was that the odometer reading was 64k miles, my 94 has 140k but it's running strong. I really want a 99 engine in my 94 chassis though. I drove one last year and really enjoyed it. But you're correct; I have no idea on the condition of the internals. He's asking $1,500.00 for the whole package.

I may be mistaken, but the 99 does not have a CAS from the factory.
I got my 99 engine which was in good condition, for 500.

Oh yeah, my bad, you're right, the sensor's on the front of the camshaft on the 99. I'd still stay away for 1,500$ though.

begi may be of some help as well. I think this was done back when FM & begi were working together. FM has discontinued the uber but BEGI is still developing their version I think.

Well, the unit is in fact a discontinued Flyin Miata Ubercharger kit produced by BEGI. The unit was originally released in 2004 and was short lived due to reliability issues. :eek: So, as much as I would like to bolt on an extra 50 hp at a cost I can afford, I'm walking away from this one.
Plan B is to install a 99 head on my 94. (i know here I can get one). My motor is nearly at 140k and since the head work will be done it is a good time to refresh the motor, correct? Can anyone suggest a guide for me to read and familiarize myself on what should be done at this point. I want to build up some knowledge before I see the mechanic.
Also, is a exhintake cam swap advisable?
