Default TDR 30-94 on a JDM VVT

Am proud I got this installed within a couple weeks of receipt, and that included a delay waiting for a replacement piece from TDR for part of the bracket that was machined wrong. Anyway, I fired it up for the first time tonight, and first start the belt slipped over a groove, so I adjusted it and loosened up the idler a bit. Let it run for a little bit the second time, but it is making a clacking sound that has me a little concerned. Seeing as it was after 12 on a work night, I stopped, but am curious if anyone can identify what might be making the sound.

I’M running the same setup I’ve never heard a noise like that. Sorry I haven’t been any help.

Have you used a long straightedge to ensure both pullies are aligned along the same plane? Wondering if the sound is related to the belt going off groove and slipping back into place. Other thing I’d check is ensuring the belt isn’t hitting anything, like the CPS wires, coolant lines or a grounding wire connected to the PS pump.

I haven't yet, it's been in the 30s the last couple days so I haven't been out in my unheated garage. Hoping to get back out tonight or tomorrow to investigate further.

It takes about an hour but my Mr.Heater Big Buddy hooked up to a 20# propane tank does wonders in my detached 20x20 up here in Grand Rapids. At least it keeps some feeling in my fingers so I can work for another hour or two before I start dropping nuts and bolts left and right. Buying propane like that isnt exactly cheap/efficient but its better than nothing!

Noise sounds repetitive/cyclical. I would do another once over of anything and everything close to or near the belt drive system and zip tie anything/everything away from that area. Sounds like when one of my connectors was dancing around on the fan. Hopefully you get it figured out so you can bring it up to Gingerman and give me a ride

Late to this party I know... I’d double-check the slider pulley and make sure the 14 mm bolt is tightened down.

OH, yeah, I forgot to follow up. I put a single washer behind the main bracket on all of the mounting bolts and it spaced it out perfectly to keep the belt aligned. It is still slipping some at high RPMs, but unfortunately there is not an easy, safe 6 rib belt solution available. I am waiting for BHJ to get back to me with cost of having a run of dampers made with a 6 rib outer pulley, will probably try to get a group buy together so we can get some made.

Just want to make sure you understand what you’re trying to do. Even after you spend hours calling, weeks waiting, and hundreds spent.

1. in your WTb ad, everyone warned the 6-Rib pulley was made for an older version of the Supermiata Harmonic Damper. So you’re either asking to be the guinea pig for the latest version and a newly cut 6-rib extension, or you’re getting the older pulley, and asking for the old version of the damper made.
2. When you get the pulleys, the TDR Rotrex Pulley and tensioner are on the original belt “plane”. So you need to forward the whole setup an inch or so so it’s inline with the 6-Rib pulleys.
3. Emilio said he sold 4. So a group buy seems pretty impossible.

if the whole upgrade is due to belt slip, another option is getting the 150mm overlay from TDR. I’d agree that their lightweight crank pulley without damping isn’t a great idea. But pulley additions to a stock damper have worked without issue provided max RPM remain stock. Then buy a bigger Rotrex SC nose pulley to attenuate and get more surface area for belt wrap. No guarantee for better wrap, but more feasible less than a month.

FYI, I still demand a ride Good luck resolving the belt slip!

He's asking BHJ about a damper that natively has a 6 rib outer. From that point, the rest is pretty straightforward.
