I just bought a used C30-94 (low mileage, ~5000km) which isn't completely smooth when rotated by hand (a bit notchy). It feels just like rotating a bearing that is containing some grit/dirt There is no shaft play however and I do not have to use a lot of force to spin it.

How is it supposed to feel to rotate the shaft by hand? I would suppose that it should feel smooth but I'm uncertain due to the function of the traction fluid and the preload on the planetary bearings.

Based on your description, it sounds normal. They definitely have a "broken" feel to them. Run it!
