Looks like my engine is coming out for the turbo install. This means I should take the time to upgrade my clutch (Because I have a stock 1.8 replacement I put in won't hold turbo power.)

Thing is, this clutch is brand new. Probably under 10k miles new. I'm thinking of buying a beefier clutch, but using the stock pressure plate. Dumb idea?

They do great work and it will be a easy swap with it out of the car. Now before you ask, "Why don't you buy a whole new clutch kit?" Well, I don't want to spend the money if I don't have to. Would it be nice to have an FM happy meal? Yes. But I'm not wanting to spend more money and the engine wasn't supposed to come out anyway.

My noob flame suit is on and I am prepared.


(Goal is to hold 10 psi on a super 60 ebay turbo - 1.6l engine)

Yes. if anything you want a beefier pressure plate with the stock or organic clutch

disk doesn't do much if its not clamped down with enough force

Ultimately I think its pretty silly to do all that work and not just do it right from the start but its your car

Did you read my little stint about the supercharger? I was an idiot and thought I would have it forever so the 1.8 clutch would be fine.

I also planned on tapping the pan with the motor in the car. Well, the guy who was gonna do it had to back out. Now the only way to tap it would be to take the motor out. (I don't have the tools to tap it in the car)

It would only make sense to address my clutch issue since it is out of the car. But did I want to? Not yet. So I have to make accommodations where I can.

But, if I need a better pressure plate, I need a better pressure plate. Any recommendations? Don't need anything fancy.

exedy or act or you can hit up fm or 949 and see if they'll sell you just the plate

On the car I owned before a miata I ran an act 6 puck and a stock replacement exedy pressure plate. Mainly because the act extreme clutch kit was basically the same thing, on that car pretty much all the clutch kits used the stock pressure plate.

I dont like super grabby clutches or high effort. But the stock miata clutch really could go for a bit more effort. I wouldnt want to run a grippy enough friction disk to hold good power with the stock pressure plate.

grabby disk + stock plate feels crappy around town. bad engagement and still no significant torque capacity
stock disk + heavier plate is harder on your left leg but should hold more torque than the above and engage in a more forgiving manner

So I should get a better pressure plate if I want to do anything on the cheap?
