6 speed turrets drain into the case. You can fill it from there.

Lol yeah, I've heard of 5 speeds giving up at such a wide range of torque figures that I'm hesitant to throw my old 5 speed back in. If I do so, I'm only gonna run wastegate pressure hah.

Copy that, knew you could fill it from the top but I've only ever filled it from the fill plug. Guess I was just expecting to see more fluid up there.

I don't have the time to pull the trans today but could probably angle the trans down and pull the cover off the shift turret on my lunch break. Anyone have input on whether or not any possible culprits might be visible from there? It sounds like the journal bearings/bushings I need to check are actually inside the case itself, yeah?

Yes, the case would have to come apart to see the shift forks.

As for repair, I had another set of forks that were less worn that I threw in, so I can't attest for a fix. Pressing the bearing back in with a proper retaining compound designed for press fit items in oily environments would be best. I don't have the answer for that without digging into MSDS's to see what's out there. "Red" threadlocker isn't likely to be the right thing for the application.

My guess is the 5th side fork bearing is prarie-******* between hot/cold/load depending on the clearances around it but it's really hard to tell from my screen, those boxes are vaugely intricate.
There's no real way to peek inside without getting invasive. Taking the bell housing off is easy, putting it back on is the hard part.
Iirc 6th has its own fork within the tailshaft, and 5/R share one but i do not remember how those two interacted. Removing the tail side of the trans is way different, there's bolts that hold parts from outside the case.

Got it. My bad, I was referring to the lever selector when I asked about pulling the turret out, of course the shift forks are deeper inside the case.

That's about what I was expecting. Gonna have to find a day to pull the trans out and take it apart to see what's going on. Wasn't aware the reassembly on these could be a PITA, but I should cut my teeth on a manual trans teardown sooner or later. It'll be a good project and by the end I'll hopefully be able to speak about the internals of these things more aptly with you guys haha.

Might try to get ahold of a spare box first to minimize downtime, then turn this one into my backup box. Will post the conclusion in this thread, even if it takes a little while.

My friend has a few MSM boxes for sale, shame cause we could have brought one down to Laguna last weekend. I think he was asking around $1500 each.

That’s how the timing usually works on these things haha.

I think I have a line on another box, but may hit you up for his info if that falls through, if he’s willing to ship.

I swear to god I’ll let this thread rest soon.

Doing some more reading on here seems to confirm issues regarding the shift forks expanding at a different rate causing difficulty shifting on track vehicles at high temperatures. I never questioned that part. However, after reading some of Emilio and others’ old posts, I wonder if my box doesn’t actually have an issue and is simply just running too hot after I take it up to top speed.

Before Sunday, I’ve never taken my car to top speed before, and it’s only had this much power on tap (albeit only ~40 more horsepower than I’ve had for the last few months) for a week. I think I’m gonna toss a temperature sensor in the trans, track some temps, then rig up a cooler setup and see if it subsides. I already have a couple old coolers and will just need some fittings/line, a temp sensor and a pump.

I’m aware there’s very likely an internal issue with my trans, but rigging up a cooler setup won’t take extremely long, and will still be beneficial to my setup even if I need to tear the box apart. I’m gonna research and execute a plan for a cooler and report back. Still might pick up another 6 speed (if nothing else as a backup) if my lead comes through.
