about to install a 6 speed. Some questions
 

So, my second 6 speed transmission is about to arrive (don't ask).

Here are a couple of questions:

1) What transmission fluid are you guys using?
2) I read somewhere that I have to exchange the sensor connectors. Can someone clarify this?
3) This is the list of parts RotorNut posted as needed to get the speed to read accurately in another thread:

"I used an M502-17-441 gear as I read that the M503 is good for larger wheels, such as 17". But it probably doesn't make a huge difference overall.

This is what I used to build the gear setup:

1011-17-442A - This is the sleeve/housing that will position the gear in the proper location to engage the gear within the transmission. If the sleeve that comes in a 5-speed transmission is used, the smaller 6-speed gear will be free-floating and will not engage. Thus, no readings.
M502-17-441 - This is the actual gear.
9922-20-214 - Spring Pin for holding the gear in the sleeve.
9958-60-8166 - Oil Seal for inside the sleeve.
1011-17-443 - O-Ring for the outside of the sleeve."

Is anyone able to buy them for me? I'd be willing to pay an extra fee for your help.

And btw; I use 16" wheels instead of the common 15" ones. Would that make a lot of difference in my speed readings?

1) I was using MT-90
2) You'll need to splice/connect your neutral and reverse switch wires into the neutral and reverse switches into the transmission. It's only 4 wires.
3) I put an email out to my Mazda parts guy for you.

The M502 gear is 19 teeth and is better for taller tires. On my 205/50/15 tires the speedo was off 3-4 mph because I was supplied the M502. ZX-Tex used the M503 (20-tooth gear) and with his 205/50/15 tires he said his speedo was only off 1-2mph. I think you would be better off with the M502.

I'm on that Motorcraft stuff everyone was raving about for the past 6 months. So for its great, and it got noticeably smoother after a couple hundred miles. For a 6 speed my transmission shifts smooth as butter.

I'm on the 4.10 torsen rear end with 16" wheels and the speedo is only off by like 2mph or so. Definitely not bad.

My only gripe about this setup is that 1st gear is USELESSS.. Anything above 50% throttle and it spins and hits the rev limiter so fast I jerk forward like a noob:giggle:

I don't have the 1st gear problem. I have 3.63 gears installed.

No problem! I'll write myself a note to take some pictures of my 6-speed tonight with the modified wires so you'll know what needs to go where so that you can make everything plug in like OEM.

This is the sensor that's on the driver's side of the 6-speed, you don't have to do anything with it except plug it into the harness that's hanging under the car:

This is the one on the passenger's side. I cut the bullet connectors off of the switch wiring on the 5-speed and connected them to the 6-speed's switch wiring. Polarity does not matter.:

wtf is the neutral switch for again? I didn't connect any of that shit under the car, lol.

LMAO. Seriously? I think its so you dont shift into reverse while your in 5th or 6th gear and think you have another gear to go. I think i may be wrong someone told me once but i forgot...:facepalm:

As it was explained to me the neutral switch tells the ECU when to start closed loop idle timing and air control. Is that fact? IDK.

Tell me more about the MTG? Have you tried the motocraft as well to compare with or MTL/MT-90?

Interesting on the drive gears. I just got the one someone else had bought with this 3.63 rear end. I guess I'll see if it's off and try it.

Of course, what matters, Rafa, is not the rim size, but the overall rolling diameter (rim size + tire width * profile * fudge factor since manufacturers all lie). Measure the diameter of the tire, and that'll tell you if you need to change the gear. The 3.63 is a much bigger factor.

6 speed short shifter install
 

Ok guys, I got my 6 speed. We should be mounting it Friday so I have a new question:

I bought a 6 speed short shifter and would like to know what kind of issues I may face when I install it. I remember reading somewhere about problems when installing 5 speed short shifters but I can't find the thread.

Does anyone have additional info in this regard?
