Anyone using tuner style lug nuts?
Hey everyone!
I've been researching wheel studs and lug nuts, I wanted something a little more hefty holding my wheels on, and have pretty much decided on the ARP 100-7719 wheel studs. Next I started researching tuner style lug nuts and I didn't find very much information. I found some made by Varrstoen that weren't too expensive but were open ended. Then I found some Gorilla Automotive lug nuts that were closed ended. I wanted to use close ended lug nuts but I didn't know how long they needed to be with the longer studs. Could anyone shine light on the subject? If it helps anything, I do not plan on running spacers and my rims are 15x7 Rota Grids with +38 offset. I just want to find someone with personal experience with the product so I know they work. Thanks! -Brandon L. |
I have tuner style lug nuts.. and i'm not very happy with them. No defects, but if I lose the "KEY" i'm completely screwed. Larger items have gone missing or forgotten at home.

Hey bud, thanks for the input! Are you running the factory studs, and what brand lug nuts did you go with? Losing the key isn't going to be a big issue for me, I've had a wheel lock on my other vehicles and I just keep the key in my glove box :)

FWIW you want a lug nut that matches the pitch of the hole on your wheel. If the pitch is off then you have an extremely small contact point and it does no good.
Don't buy from varrstoen, they're a ripoff shitty brand. |
I use Gorilla open ended lugs with the same studs. It requires a 13/16" socket, but I've had no issues with mine.

The 949racing lug nuts have a 60 degree conical seat, but every time I try to find the size/shape of the lug nut seat on the Grids, it just says to use a tapered lug nut. Even the Rota website doesn't have the spec. Do you think these will work properly, or would you happen to know the spec? Thanks again, everyone, for your reply! -Brandon L. |
Most wheels use a 60* taper, just as most aftermarket lug nuts also have a 60* taper.
I have seen some OEM wheels / lug nuts use a different taper though. If you get into some knockoff or JDM wheels you may find a different taper too, i don't know. |

I have some aluminium ebay ones that are the same style as 949 ones. I have no complaints but one time I didn't slide the socket all the way on the lug and I deformed it when I twisted on it with a breaker bar. I'm sure the 949 ones are better but still, be careful.

I'll vouch for the superiority of the 949 lug nuts. Once I accidentally used a 21mm socket to tighten them. The socket got stuck on because it was just the right size to bind up on the nut. Even after having to knock the socket of with a bfh the lug nut was still in pristine condition.

Went from OEM studs with tuner-style (Muteki closed SR35) lugnut to ARP studs with 949Racing lugnut.
Nothing to complain, both are doing a good job. But I do feel more confident about the 949Racing on a trackday. |
