Bare mimimum effort way of replacing springs only on coilover setup?

Hi Guys,

Before I start thinking myself: what is the bare mimimum effort way of replacing springs only on coilover setup?

I'm replacing my 500/300 setup with 800/500 because racecar.

Drop the top mount, detach the top mount, slide off spring, replace, replace, replace.

the rear sway may need to be disconnected, as well as the front long bolt. But that's the way I've done it.

Thanks. Was looking for something like this before I started.
Long bolt meaning to pull the upper control arm outboard? That would suck as I need to remove the sway reinforcement brackets.

There are other methods, the problem in the front will be getting enough droop to get access to the top hat...I cant remember if I had to pull the long bolt or not, but you could disconnect the knuckle if anything...hell even disconnecting the sway bar up front might be enough.

but that's what I did to swap on my replace springs in the rear on my teins a few weeks back.

"because racecer" = ban. Final warning.

You might be able to drop the spring seat low enough on the coilovers (perhaps off the bottom?) to get the assembly out without removing the long bolt or popping the ball joint.

Long bolt removal is way simple. And doing so gives you this.

He's saying that his sway bar mount reinforcements are in the way of removing the long bolt. Pull one sway bar link on each end and have your fat friend stand on the hub. You should be able to flex the bushings enough to flip the shock out of the upper control arm.

miatauser884 07-19-2011 01:36 PM

I was able to undo the top mount, the lower shock bolt, step on the bottom arm, and move the shock into a position where I could remove the spring. This was with a stock size spring, so it might be easier with a smaller diameter spring.

Just take it out?

should be 2 nuts and a bolt if your on anything besides oem.

THIS happened to be the way fortunately. The spring diameter and strut length and full droop with the two top mounts disconnected was enough. This is actually something you could do track side.

Now rocking 800/500 lbs/in (14/9 kg)

wannafbody 07-19-2011 10:04 PM

A pry bar helps to increase droop to pull the shock.

what condition are those springs? What diam? How much you want for them shipped to 35802? Though it appears the shipping could be cost prohibitive.

The front 500 went to the back, so I only have 2x 300lbs/in springs in 7" length. 2.25" I.D. Shipping will be the issue and not sure if you want 300 only?

shlammed 07-20-2011 08:43 AM

would be nice...

Braineack 07-20-2011 08:49 AM

what would be nice?! are you overhung?

Laur3ns 07-20-2011 09:06 AM

Shipping will be USD 50 max. How much are you looking to spend on 2x 300lbs/in springs? New is USD 150 from 949 excluding shipping.

shlammed 07-20-2011 09:31 AM

Not overhung, i want 300 lb springs for my daily. currently its 600lb and it rides like i could remove the shocks and replace with metal rod for more comfort.

Braineack 07-20-2011 09:34 AM

So two people were discussing 300 lb springs, and you were just thinking to yourself, "My setup is harsh, 300 lbs springs would be nice," so then you proceeded to post the last three words of your intimate thought, without any real context or relation to that of what djp or spooky were discussing?

is that correct?
