Default Boss Frog 8.8 kit WTF

Ok so this worries me... Based on previous thread, i've been convinced that the 8.8 is the better idea than the Getrag, especially now that OS Giken has a diff for it.

Miata V8 Swap

Looking at Kit #4 for axles, i read this:

Level 2 axles are direct bolt-in axles which can be used without changing the original hubs and bearings. They are designed to handle 400HP, and uses proprietary inner CV, 4340 rolled spline half-axle bars and DSS’s proprietary chromoly outer CV. These axles are for “spirited” street driving – a few burnouts and excessive acceleration but nothing too serious. Stock and non-adjustable height shocks and springs will fit with this kit.
Level 3 axles are built for more aggressive driving including some autocross or street racing. They are designed to handle 500HP, and use the 8.8 series Ford 28 spline inner CV, 4340 rolled spline half-axle bars, a larger than stock chromoly outer CV and a set of new hubs broached to fit the outer CV’s. These outer CV’s are larger than stock, but smaller than the 8.8 series Ford outer CV’s, so that stock and non-adjustable height shocks and springs will fit with this kit.

1) What the hell is the point?
2) Can anyone tell me that Xidas will fit with this setup?
3) Are there other 8.8 mounting options out there?
4) Would i be better suited to just have some custom axles done locally for that money that might fit?
5) HP ratings: 500hp in.... a Miata? Do people even break stock axles in Miatas?

I know Dem768 was, and he was running a Potato. But he was also drag racing, and I seem to recall ride height may have come into play.

Do you want the 8.8 out of my Mark 8? If we can part it out from your 'shop' after we're done with my truck I can probably get a lot more for it than selling it to a junk yard. It's yours if you want to help me with the part out.

Wikipedia says in '95 they had a 3.27, and it's a '96 so that would be my best guess.

That's a good start. That + FD trans + OS Giken diff = hilarity.

You can readily get 8.8 gears from 2.x to 5.x. As a bonus, if you buy Ford Racing gears (smaller selection than aftermarket companies) they almost never need any adjustment from the OE shim settings. You just bolt them in and check backlash and tooth pattern and you're set.

Yeah we break axles. I dont understand why they say it fits stock style shocks though. Were there axles that didnt fit stock style shocks and only adjustable ones? Thats how its worded, like there used to be axles that didnt fit with stock style shocks. If you look to the left of the axle description you'll notice a picture of a level 2 axle with a PSShit coil over enxt to it.

The way i'm reading it is that it doesn't fit threaded body coilovers. Or at least, they can't guarantee fitment.

yes... when people put LSx V8's in their Miata's. The page you pulled the 8.8 kit from was for Boss Frog's LSx V8 conversion components. The axles they got DSS to make are a lot beefier than the OEM units which is why (as thenuge26 pointed out) if you are slammed, the perch/coil wouldn't clear the axle.

Should I at least be able to hit recommended Xidas height without issue?

Their website sucks something horrible. I could only find the Getrag options. Do they still do 8.8s?

Neato. Is there anything we like better about their kit than Boss Frog's?

Clearly. Look at Xidas vs. Racelands.

I think its more of look at xidas vs normal ASTs, yes the normal ASTs cost like a grand more for singles than xidas, were they actually better?
