You can buy a full spec miata cage kit for well under 1K. You can find other miata cages for much less. You can occasionally find used cages too.

I would imagine you've gotta have a pretty fantastic shop to do bends in materials that would be SCCA approved and save yourself significant money. It's going to be tough to find plans as all the companies that build cages aren't going to want people knocking them off. Good luck. I think it's going to be extremely difficult to find all the measurements and angles you need.

2 schools of thought.... buy premade or custom.

For a 4pt roll bar, make a carboard template of an existing main hoop, and have it bent at a local race shop. They have the right equipment and tubing. OR buy a 4 pt premade... the fit and finish is worth the extra $.

If you are building a racecar ..... spend the extra $ for a custom cage.

Boltins may pass tech .... but they do very little in the handling dept. A good cage is not only designed to save your life, but also to stiffen the chassis as much as legally possible.

What are your goals?

Looking to build a roll bar that can be added on to to have a scca legal full cage. I think what I'm going to do is build a cage like the one miatacage.com has with a bolt in halo, or just wait altogether for the halo. That way, at the moment, while the car is still on the street, I can run the bottom half of the cage for autox and high speed touring (or whatever they call it at your track) and add on to the cage to build a full cage. The materials handling isn't the problem, and honestly, building the cage isn't a huge problem. My only worry is that I'll only be reusing the main hoop and the door bars for whenever the full cage goes in. It seems like alot of the custom cages run to the trunk, whereas, I don't really mind cutting up the car, but running a diagonal into the trunk isn't an option as long as I have a soft top. I was really just looking for a few angles and measurements to make things a little easier right now, but it's not a big deal, it will just take a little longer.

The diagonal to the trunk isn't an SCCA requirement. Most of the cages are designed for dedicated race cars and virtually none of the racers keep the soft top in place. They are built for maximum safety typically, not minimum requirements. You do have to have a diagonal but I believe it can be run between the bars like on a Hard Dog or Boss Frog.
