Default Gearbox noise

Hi guys well after selling my last 5, ive missed the fun of owning a 5, so after a good scour of the internet i found a little gem.
Its a 1990 Eunos in mariner blue, 65k.
Ive just been away for the weekend in it and discovered it has a horrible noise.

It seems to be coming from the gearbox in low revs when pulling off and letting off the throttle. when im in 4th or 5th its fine i drove all the way back and couldnt hear it.

You can notice it around town starting and stopping, its like a grinding/rattling noise, and again it comes in about 2000 revs to 3500 and then goes and it comes back again if you let off the throttle around that rev range.

Any ideas

thanks

Mine makes all kinds of rattling noises, no grinding though. That's how I would describe it at least.

i guess it is more of a rattle than grinding.

Probably just worn out like mine. Mine used to be a whine, until after the rebuild I messed up and ran it dry for over a mile. I topped it off, but now I have a whine in every gear on top of a rattle at idle with clutch engaged. I'm assuming its the bearings or lots of excess play. I wouldn't worry about it.

In low gears it sounds like I'm driving a car with a dog-box, just quieter. Nothing really wrong with it, it's just noisy. My dad's car does the same thing.

^ Thats a good way to explain it for me as well. Of course the light weight flywheel didn't help make it any quieter, nor the running it dry of fluid. So mine sounds almost like a rally car, minus being fast or handling like one.

That sound is a good sound it means your transmission is about to make happy on the pavement.

Transmissions cost less then $300 at most junk yards, and can often be found in the classifieds here +- $150. Make sure it is full of oil, and drive it till it breaks.

Change the gear oil, make sure the turret oil is topped off, then report back. May even want to change the differential fluid while you are at it, Redline makes a great upgraded oil, or Mobil 1 if more easily sourced as it sounds like you may be in the UK? Fill out your profile info so we can more easily help you.
