Help me pick my driveline for 600 whp!
Alright, well my quest for 600 whp in my B6 is in the works...I know we do not have many options when it comes to this, but I want to see what others come up with.
Trans options: Just keep stock 5 speed and see how long it lasts 6 Speed 6 Speed with cyro'd gears FD Turbo II Trans Quaife Trans Rear end options Keep my cusco 1.2 way LSD stock axles Above plus custom DSS axles 8.8 rear end If anyone has anything else to add, and what I should do, other combos that might work? I want to keep it cost down but with reliability in mind. For the last options in both aspects it will be close to $6,000 w/o labor which is ridiculous. The car is mostly driven on the street, the car will run 225/50/15 MT Drag Radials daily at this power level, and possibly 26" tall slicks at the drag strip. |
I know Bill Wilner @MiataRoadster.com has a pretty sweet, never used, FC TII setup, I know because a friend was interested in it but we couldn't get it shipped due to the substantial weight/dimensions (we are in Greece). Drop him an email.

I'm absolutely amazed your stock 5 speed is still intact. When you pull it you need to gold plate it and have it shown off in some museum :giggle:
On a serious note, I think quaife with custom gearing would be your best bet. Contact Eliminator, he has a custom box in his car and very close to 600whp as well. According to his thread he has no problems getting traction due to the custom gearing being so long. |
I know, my trans is a champ. I did have it completely rebuilt before I went turbo 4 years ago, I am sure that has something to do with it lasting so long.
|
I'd do TII trans on a budget, FM trans if not :) Also investigate using the T5's and adapter popular with the V8 guys.
|
he's got a crazy ass setup with tons of money invested and lots of power and the thing to cheap out on will the the transmission? FUCK the t2 trans.
you need straight cut s0n |
lol Quaife isn't straight cut though, unfortunately. How did that 800 hp Miata guy mount that automatic to his 1.8????? That guy needs to start posting here.
|
You want an auto?
My my dick just went limp |
No! I do not, however, I would like to explore something like the T56 mounted to my B6...He he is running a TH400 trans or w.e the hell he's running I don't see why I cannot run a T56.
|
I can pick up a complete Turbo II Trans with adapters for under 600 bucks! Umm...that with a 1.8 rear with custom DSS axles that will support 800 hp might be an option.
|
fwiw a t56 used is somewhere in the 2000 range.
|
not unless you like being ripped off. Ive seen them for 1k without much searching.

But yes, a T56 with some decent parts in it can take a beating. Someone needs to fab up an adapter plate for them. |
Bill has a unused FC rear end, not transmission. However, he makes the adapter plates and the whole stabang for 400 bucks. You can get Turbo II transmissions for about 170-200 bucks off the rx7 forums.
I would love to put a T56 transmission in my car, but that's uncharted grounds and I am not sure I am ready to undertake that. |

Just throwing this out there, but with a 600WHP car, a TH400 with a manual valvebody would be pretty sweet. No idea on how much easier/harder it would be to adapt relative to a T-56. I think it would be the same. A 4L60E is essentialy similar to a TH350 IIRC. And it bolted up to the same LSXs that T-56s did. Or go baller and find a 4L80E which is IIRC the same footprint as a TH400/4L60E and have a truly basdass drag racing setup. Well setup Auto > Manual for launching when you get to that level. Plenty of aftermarket for them. Plenty of LSX guys going with 4L80Es.

He doesn't want auto because he is a boyracer.

I always enjoy watching vids of people in FI Vipers trying to run 9's with 1000WHP and T-56s and even with quite a bit of skill/setup/experience just slipping all over the track through the 1/8. I bet a Viper with ~900WHP and its weight/wheelbase is about as hard to drive as a Miata with 600WHP and its respective wheelbase and weight.
Plus, reverse pattern manual valve bodies are 100% badass. I always hear conflicting info on if they can be used on a track and downshifted etc. I have this nagging desire to run a 454 Nova with mini-moon wheels (think cop car), 10.5 slicks, a TH400 with a reverse pattern manual, and a really nice semi-matte gray paintjob. Or just own Blades car. That would work. Hijack over. Sorry. |
