I am doing the unthinkable

Since my car has been on a heavy diet in the last few years, it has gotten taller and taller. Warren Sapp could slide under it to do an oil change.

Because the car is so high, it has put the axles in a sharp bend at the cv joints, and this has caused me to break axles. I broke 3 so far.

I have been saving for some good coilovers, but I really want to see how the car runs at the dragstrip. I have made the decision to chop the springs, and per the advice of Sixshooter, install nb top hats.

:giggle: I know it is ridiculous.

Got the rears done, and I think it is close to the stock location. I will do the fronts tomorrow, and I hope to be at the dragstrip this week.

UrbanSoot 03-28-2010 06:50 PM

dude... just get some suspension and stop breaking axles.

But I want to go to the track NOW. I am saving for some nice coilovers. It maybe a few months before that happens. They are pricey.

NB hats and buy springs you could use with your coilover set later.

elesjuan 03-28-2010 08:16 PM

Sparetire 03-28-2010 08:38 PM

That is not going to happen. Believe me, they work just fine. That set up has put me in the thirteens with a ported 95 cylinder head.

Bogart racing to run slicks and front skinnies.

Jesus, you could swap out springs for earlier na springs at least. Thats crazy high. But I know what you mean about wanting to save up till you can afford what you really want.

Time Slips, photographs, video and dyno plots or it didn't happen. (It didn't anyway, so I expect no attempt at proof.)

When I first read the thread title I thought you were finally taking the turbo plunge.

Cut springs aren't as bad as you think...you just spend a lot of time on the bumpstops, so I hope you have FCM pieces.

First time I cut mine I didn't even take them off the car. This required some creativity with spring compressors and the angle grinder with a cut off wheel. Honestly, it would have probably taken just as long disassembling everything.

UrbanSoot 03-29-2010 01:41 PM

ive got a set of swift springs that i can sell you cheap.

are you one of the honda guys that now has a miata? cut springs on a progressive spring is a VERY bad idea. its not a big deal on linear springs.

If ever there was a car screaming for Racelands, this is it...

miata2fast 03-29-2010 04:31 PM

Well, I got it done. It is still just a tad taller than stock, but it will work for now.

If the Desoto track is open this week for test and tune, I should be able to make it. I need to do an alignment and work on a few details before I go, but It should be fine. I will do the tuning at the track, and it may take a few track sessions before I get the best pass. My goal is to better Fuji Racing's best pass for a naturally aspirated car which is in the 13.50's

I will send an after pic sometime today.
