Interesting development with my 6 speed
Some of you are aware that I thought the synchros were shot in my 6 speed. I bought an MS 6 speed, and it is currently at the shop being swapped.
On my drive over to the shop today I had all of the rubber boots removed. Except the one that holds in the shifter. The boot part was cut from it because it was torn. I may have reversed the orientation of the shifter the other day when I pulled it out to take some pictures.
In any case, the damn thing didn't pop out of gear once and felt good. So either the shifter was oriented wrong, or the boots were applying too much force on the shifter, and that's why it was popping out of gear. This may still mean that the synchros are worn, but not completely shot. It shifts gears like a champ and no binding into gears. My purchase of a new trans may have been premature and a costly oversight on my part. It's still getting swapped in case the 04 MS trans is in fact better, plus, the new one doesn't leak.
Any opinions on this situation?
Regardless, In the near future I will have a leaking six speed, that I will say has worn synchros for sale cheap. I'm also going to include almost an entire 2nd six speed worth of internals with it. (synchros on that one felt very positive when engaged.) That way a savvy person could get a good 6 spd trans for cheap.
