How thick is the Motorcraft stuff? Between 10w30 and gear oil, or straight up gear oil?
At 40°, the Ford stuff scores a 76 cSt viscosity, whereas most competing oils are in the 90-100 cSt range. This is confirmed by a higher stated viscosity index of 211 (ASTM D-2270), as compared to typically 160 or so for most other oils I'm looking at. So it should be about 30% thinner when cold. For comparison, "most" other oils I'm looking at includes Valvoline SynPower 75W-90, Amsoil GL-4 75W-90, Mobil1 synthetic 75W-90 and Redline MT90. (The Redline comes closest to the Ford's low-temp viscosity, with a 90 cSt at 40°, but it's still a far cry.) It also smells like strawberries*. * = does not smell like strawberries. |

Should have written "tastes", without the disclaimer. If you were evil.

That having been said, 10W-30 is in fact a powerful laxative. |

The Ford spec sheet calls it a fully synthetic GL-4 75W-90, with a viscosity at 100°C of 15.4 cSt.

Very interesting specs. Looks really great. I may have to give this a try over MT-85 next year. Love that 211 VI. robert It's amazing stuff. I can't see myself using any other transmission oil in the foreseeable future. |
