I know that @Savington likes sport bakes, but I don’t know what pads.

@sixshooter likes the PFC, but I think with some form of Big Brake kit.

Maybe they can be helpful here.

My limited experience is that I would go with Standard 1.8 brakes with PFC-11 pads over sport brakes and unknown pads. The guys I called in, though, have a lot of experience.

 

I'm amazed you are using HP+ at 300whp. I had to ditch them before 200whp.

I really like the PFC pads. They stop exceedingly well hot and cold. And they don't destroy the finish on wheels like some of the Hawk pads I've used.

I would recommend stepping up to 11.75 rotors and one of the aftermarket caliper kits for the front. I have V8Roadsters and am very happy with them. They work well with the stock 1.8 rear calipers with the adapter bracket that allows you to use the sport rear rotors. Replacement rotors for the front can be ~$30 and go up from there.

Other vendors have good 11.75 kits as well.

 

I was under the impression that 11.75" kits won't fit under most 15x8 wheels?

11.75 brakes fit under most 15x8in wheels. They fit under some 15x6.5 with spacers. What wheels again?

I think have narrowed it down to the V8R Pro Series Radial Mount Front Brake Kit, rear sport rotor adapters, Centric rear rotors, and PFC11 pads on all 4 corners. Should run me about $1,300 or so. (Shout-out to Shandelle @ V8R for answering the questions I had.)

 

So swapping out to non-sport rear calipers?

That price also gets you in the range of the Stoptech ST(R)42 kits, which is a pretty nice caliper.

EDIT: disregard ST42 comment, the radial kit is only $855 of your $1,300.

 

I only have sport in the front, non-sport rears.

I did consider the Stoptech, but it would run me about $250 more. Shandelle and I decided I wouldn't really need to go that route unless I plan to get serious about tracking the car.

 

You'll be very impressed with your brakes once you do all of that.

 

I sure hope so! I ordered everything from V8R this afternoon, and some Centric premium (painted black non friction area) rotors off Amazon for $32e (p/n 120.45062 in case anyone else out there is looking) All in is going to cost me $1,385.

 

Just a reminder (i wish someone would have told me this before I dropped 2k on brakes) "upgraded" brakes wont actually stop the car faster.

You can easily lock up the stickiest tires on earth with oem miata brakes.

Seriously, its not worth it (to me). They are just bling, and you could have spent that money on aero, or something else that may benefit you greater.

Especially since you dont seem to brake hard in the first place.

 

OEM brakes had pad taper issues, rotors and pads were overheating, rotors cracking from the heat, had terrible feel because of caliper flex so were difficult to modulate, put much more heat into the front wheel bearings than the aluminum-hatted 11.75's, etc.

I'm sorry you didn't feel you experienced a benefit but I would certainly never go back and would gladly pay twice the price before giving my 11.75's up for stock.

Why ya trying to **** on my parade thumpy?!

I've been eyeing a BBK for a while now, and when I do get back to the track I want to minimize the chances of have a catastrophe. And from just about every other thread I've read, a BBK is my best option.

 

I lusted after a bbk for years. I finally get the radial mount wilwoods with ap jhook rotors. They look awesome. They fit 15x7 rims without a spacer. They also are still fixed rotor ( 350dollars per rotor and it aint a floating) They clunk loudly over bumps. They take (estimate) 3 times the pedal force to stop.

I know about the issues with stock brakes, but ****, they work, and the rotors are cheap, pads are about the same, and the op doesnt seem to brake hard enough to merit a bbk.

Im all for spending money all ***** nilly, but just standing my ground with a different perspective.

 

My rotors are ~$30. I don't recall any increase in necessary pedal pressure (I have Dynalites). Perhaps the choice of pads requires more or less pressure to accomplish needed deceleration? Mine don't clunk or pop. What brand kit are you using, Thumpetto? Seriously curious about the issues you are having.

At 300whp, a BBK is virtually a necessity.
