I recently picked up a 2004 MSM with about 40k on it. The other day I was standing behind the car and noticed that the rear driverside seems to be lower than the passenger side. So I measured from the hub to the fender on both sides and it's sitting about 1 inch lower on the drivers side. I put the vehicle up on a lift and nothing was bent and the strut bushing were fine. I find it hard to believe that a 40k mile car has a bad spring but I'm at a loss of what it could be.

I'm new to the forums but figured I would give it a shot and see if anyone had any ideas or dealt with a similar issue. I did a search but came up empty handed.

 

First of all welcome, I like your spelling and grammar skills already.

There's really only two things involved with ride height, the springs themselves and where they're mounted.

If you've got some time, swap coil over setups from side to side, rears are the easiest anyways. See if the problem is transferred. If it does, you've got something to look at. Either the perch has some how slipped or your spring did indeed go bad in 40,000 miles.

 

I assume this is the stock msm suspension?

 

Curly...thats for the pointer i'll try to switch them out real quick. Either way it looks like i'll have to switch up the suspension if it does transfer.
And sorry it is a stock MSM suspension.

 

Without going out in the cold to look at my car I can't remember if you can easily see both perches with the weight of the car on the suspension.

If so, can you just measure the distance from perch to perch on both rear springs and see if that number is different? Also, measure the distance from the lower shock mount to the lower perch on both rear wheels. If the measurement from the lower perch to the shock mount is the same, but the measurement between the two perches is different, that might suggest a sagging spring?

 

Well the reason to swap the spring assemblies is simple. If the sag follows the spring, thats the issue, if it doesnt then you have a weight transfer problem either from having a random weight somewhere or a crap load of pre-load on the front swaybar.

 

Right, we're assuming it's the "spring assembly" (or coil overs, as they're called in the real world). The real question is why. Swapping the coil overs doesnt put all the blame on the spring, as described in my post and redcamel's.
