Default so i think my differential is as broke as this thread title

i posted this in my build thread but have had no response so ill make a thread about it!

i started to drain the oil in my differential, and when i removed the drain plug i found this. i cleaned up the biggest pieces that were on the drain plug.

then i opened the differential up and found all this inside and i cant figure out where it came from.

the ring and pinion are all not scared or chewed up with the exception of one tooth on the ring. but it looks more like a casting flaw. i dont know where all this **** came from. i inspected the internal without taking the whole thing apart and have not found where the shards came from.

That looks like part of the cone clutch from the tochigi fuji LSD. Apparently a relatively common failure.

yeah, i have been reading on there about that. just gone done reading the thread stating its pieces of the 03 T-F's cone clutch.

now i gotta figure out what im gonna do and what my best options are.

1. if the 3.909 R&P is okay reuse them but use a torsen LSD
2. buy a 3.6 R&P and use a torsen LSD
3. just buy a torsen 3.9
4. just buy a torsen 4.10

+1 Did a good bit of research on this when I had one on the shelf, but never found out for sure if it was mileage related or power related, and wanted to know if the "good" units stood up to turbo abuse.

It seems that all the ones that failed under stock power happened before 40K or so miles...and if they last longer than that then they just keep going.

Do you know how many miles were on the car it came out of?

As far as power/abuse, well, we've seen your work before.

Contact spoolin2bars on here, he is selling a TorSen from a S2K....which is the same Torsen used from 95.5 to 02 for $250.....the only thing you'll need are MSM axles though.

Or you can get one of the OBX LSDs and be our guinea pig to see if they hold up or not...

They hold up....I'd get one if I needed one.

A friend of mine put on in his FC RX-7 that saw a TON of abuse (drifting)...though it wasn't boosted or anything....it still held up with no problems. I highly doubt the OBX actually makes though, I'd be more likely to believe they get them from a reputable manufacturer who makes diffs, but OBX has worked out a special price.

the car is was pulled from had almost 80k on its clock. i thought the same thing, every documented failure was under 40k miles.
