Last night I drained my old tranny fluid and was replacing with the Redline MTL. I pulled a novice mistake and didnt take a 'before' pic. I put the drain plug back in just fine and tightened down snugly, but when using my hands to replace fill plug, it got tight only like half-way in (thread wise), as in half my threads were still out. So I wrenched on it a little bit but it was not budging.

Do you guys know if it's supposed to hang out like this?

It's a pipe thread.

Take it out, put some pipe thread sealant on it, screw it back in by hand and then finish with a wrench so it's nice and snug. Done.

 

next time you plug a tranny, make sure to lube up and always tip

 

did you take some of that tranny's fluid on your chest?

(OP, it's a tapered pipe thread, so that's normal.)

 

Usually I bottom out when plugging a tranny. You've got nothing to worry about with only half your plug going in, yours is wider at the base(tapered thread).

Sometimes I am happy when I wander in to threads I don't think relate to me, like the TF2 thread or some cat thread that had a picture of someone's wife or girlfriend in it.


Then threads like this happen.

 

That plug does not need any sort of sealant on it. It also looks to be in properly.

 

Thank you for answering my question. I have kept an eye on it and it hasn't been leaking. Was just concerned b/c I've been watching "Miata Fan" on youtube following his service videos and it appeared his plug was able to go all the way in.

Are you sure? What's the white stuff in the threads and smudged on the side of the tranny in your picture?

Using thread sealant isn't required, but it's not a bad practice. I always use some on pipe threads.

An excellent thread sealer.

 

Bull semen works much better, higher viscosity.

On a srs note it looks like someone got a little too carried away with the wrench and messed up the plug and hit the trans making score marks on it.

Also why you using MTL in the trans and not MT90? Back to your original question all the the miata plugs I've seen look like that.
