transmission "dilemma"

5 speed or 6?

going with a 3.636 r&p or lower number gear

Faeflora 07-12-2012 06:44 AM

8 speeds is where it is at. Also the 3.2 gear has more bigger torque.

fooger03 07-12-2012 08:33 AM

I would buy a car with a 6-speed, as they're usually sportier than cars with 5-speeds. Maybe try a Camaro or a Corvette? Probably going to be more bettererer than something like a Prism or a Metro.

I would go for a young, agile tranny. PM pusha he will give you a few good recommendations

All ya'll posting in a tranny thread, say "yeah"!

soviet 07-12-2012 06:32 PM

The 6 speed handles more load. A younger tranny is great, but you still have to make sure it feels tight.

Faeflora's tranny, apparently. Only lasted 3 hours!

When you're working with a younger, more durable tranny, to you consider the strength of the yolk?

soviet 07-12-2012 08:32 PM

I think you mean 'yoke'.

And personally I haven't had any issue with my driveshaft. Maybe with age? Who knows, it seems to be holding up pretty well.

How is your tranny holding up from all the abuse? I figure after so many hours of uh... "track", it would be more difficult to engage? Maybe whine a bit....

18psi 07-12-2012 08:53 PM

the whining makes him harder

huskybruiserjr 07-12-2012 09:04 PM

lmfao you guys crack me up!
didnt at all answer my question but hilarious none the less!

I thought it was whining a little but it was my rear end. John gave my rear end a good thrusting and pushed the pinion a little deeper into my ring.

You're pretty yoked.

There is no "dilemma", it's very easy to decide what you want/need.

1. Look at gearing calculator: Flyin' Miata : Technical info : Gearing calculator and decide what fits your setup best.

2. A quick search will show that 5 speeds regularly break with abuse and/or when significant power is applied to them.

3. Looking at trans for sale you'll see 5 speeds are $100-$300 and 6 speeds are $600-$1000.

Since you gave us no budget, no info on the car, nothing about the power it is making, and no information on its intended purpose, there's very little we can do to give you any kind of constructive advice and nowhere else for this thread to go except toward homoerotic and transsexual innuendo.
