Just finished the rear section, snapped these pics with my phone on the way out of the shop last night, technically 6am this morning.. Hurray for all nighters!

Now onto the front half. :bang:

Don't mind the mess, we have most of our stuff stacked up in piles getting ready to move.

Hot! I want. Who's is it? Or is it all custom

ApexOnYou 03-15-2009 03:47 PM

I wish I had the means to bend my own tube, it's the MiataCage kit.

Rafa 03-15-2009 03:51 PM

It looks like someone is planning to break the 11 sec time mark. ;)

curly 03-15-2009 04:04 PM

They're the best I've seen out there, so bending your own wouldn't help too much. Great looking cage so far, keep us updated.

ZX-Tex 03-15-2009 05:53 PM

That should stiffen up the chassis a bit :eek5:

slutz4 03-15-2009 07:47 PM

extremely dope

djcommie 03-15-2009 09:33 PM

What kind of welds are those? Cold Heat soldering iron? :P I like the metal, but I hope those welds are better than they look.

Nice main hoop, looks like you should have some decent strangth if you add the A-Pillar bars or even WRC style firewall pass-through to shock mounts.

dc2696 03-15-2009 11:27 PM

Looks good, def the cage I'll be putting in the racecar later this year.

UrbanSoot 03-16-2009 12:47 AM

sweet jesus that is pure sex! i really wanted one of these but $2500 w/ installation was a bit too steep for me so i went for hard dog cage :/

Most of the welding is being done by my friend, I don't trust my own welds in terms of strength. We're using an old MIG, they aren't the prettiest welds ever made - the beads are on the larger size, but I would rather have goofy looking welds that I KNOW will hold if the shit hits the fan.

I'll be adding all of the bars - this is just what I have together so far, its about 25 hours in the making. We contemplated doing a firewall pass-through, but decided its a bit over kill for what the car is going to be. The next car will have it for sure, but not this one.

Better pics that didn't come from my shitty camera phone:

Awesome.

Just FWIW, the biggest gain in stiffness comes from linking the front and rear halves of the car. e.g. door bars, butterfly, something that connects the rollbar to the firewall or windshield header or dashboard area.

ApexOnYou 03-16-2009 02:06 PM

definately. This thing is going to be STIFF once the front half is in. Putting the front down tubes in as I write this.

mikef85 03-16-2009 04:24 PM

Is it legal to run at the track?

hustler 03-16-2009 04:51 PM

I need door bars like whoa.

ApexOnYou 03-16-2009 08:51 PM

Mike, the cage is SCCA legal, but not NHRA. As far as I know NHRA requires 1 3/4" tubing, this is 1 1/2".

:werd:
Just my Hard Dog door bars REALLY stiffened up the chassis, much more than the hard top. The door bars make getting in and out of the car a little trickier but it is worth it IMO even for a DD.

When you weld up that cage to the front of the car it will make it hella stiff like a *insert woodrow joke here*

JasonC SBB 03-17-2009 12:21 AM

Yup my door bars stiffened my '00 more than the FM butterfly+rails.
