1.3l? Really? As long as there is a 2.3l mazdaspeed variant.

Edit: over priced mazdaspeed variant

Well, in my humble opinion, Mazda needs to refocus on lighter weight and more HP. (Is 200hp asking for too much?) The new Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S twins look and perform like serious contenders and seem to be reasonably priced. Mazda better watch out if Toyota/Subaru (Toybaru/Subota??) release a convertible version.

Things will get interesting come spring.

That's more like it!

This rendering of the 2014 Miata hints that Mazda will keep the overall proportions of the current model. Narrower headlights and a larger grille provide a modest front makeover. A sharp character line extends from the headlights back along the sides of the car, before tapering off near the door handles. It's a clean shape, one that's a little less delicate than before but not overwrought with details.

Apparently, Mazda engineers were originally planning to equip the ND with a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter inline-4 with SkyActiv technology, but couldn't quite squeeze the desired horsepower from the engine. A variant of the current 2.0-liter inline-4 was also considered, but it couldn't meet their fuel economy goals. Instead Mazda has narrowed it down to either a 1.8-liter inline-4 with SkyActiv or a 1.3- or 1.5-liter inline-4 with forced induction.

Whichever powerplant Mazda decides on, you can expect the car to produce roughly 150 bhp with about a 10-percent improvement in fuel economy from the current MX-5's (22 city/28 highway mpg). Another major focal point of the future MX-5 is weight. We hear the engineers are working feverishly to reduce the car's mass to 2200 lb. or less, which means shaving about 200 lb. out of the NC while retaining its exterior dimensions.

As we already noted a couple months ago, Mazda's engineers are working hard to trim weight (reportedly as much as 200 lb.) from the 2014 Miata. This could be aided by the Japanese automaker's growing lineup of SkyActiv models, which offer improved performance and fuel economy thanks to their significantly lighter chassis and powertrains. That same engineering approach will certainly be applied here.
Well, pick your poison

It's pretty well known that Alfa and Mazda are doing a JV on this thing. The ND will be the basis for the new Alfa Spyder. Just in from the Detroit show is that Chrysler-Fiat intends to re-introduce Alfa Romeo to the US market. I've seen some of the previous generation Alfa Spyders in Italy. Really nice styling and interiors (although that generation was FWD). So, if the Japanese styling gets too wierd, we'll have an Italian-styled version available.

I hope Mazda doesn't make the ND look like that, as it would be a huge disappointment imo..

Getting closer to reality:

2016 Mazda MX-5 Chassis Reveals a Lighter, Smaller Next-Gen Miata » AutoGuide.com News

As I look at the new chassis, it's striking how similar it is to the NA. Obviously, they got a lot right with the original car. A lot of concepts that have stood the test of time.

Looks like it has a complex multi link in the rear, kind of disappointing.

Looks fairly similar to the current NC rear suspension, which I prefer over the NA/NB stuff.
