Anyone else having a bad time with trying to participate in the Maxxis contingency program through NASA?

hornetball 06-02-2015 04:02 PM

I got my contingency tires. Took about 2 months.

Arca_ex 06-02-2015 04:18 PM

I've received 5 tires so far but they still owe me 2 more. Going on almost 4 months now.

I can take some time I won a couple sets in January and it took 4 months to get them in but it was my understanding at the time they were renewing contracts with Maxxis during that time frame and there was a delay due to stock.

Maxxis has been offering amazing contingency for NASA racers. They wear like iron, don't heat cycle out, and have stiff sidewalls, and communicate well. They do seem to run narrower than many other performance tires. But yes... it's been a few months for me to get me contingency tires.

hornetball 07-15-2015 10:11 AM

Took 2 months for my last set of contingencies.

Arca_ex 07-15-2015 08:05 PM

They finally found out that there was an error on my tires, they thought they shipped all 7 of them at the same time but had only shipped 5. Good thing I still had the packing list that I got with them. Got the last 2 tires they owed me a bit ago, I think total wait time for those was about 5 months.

Probably switching back to Hoosiers anyways since their contingency program is with a contact at the actual company who's job it is to handle things like these instead of having to deal with a middleman at NASA who is probably volunteering their time.

finally found the time to order in a set of 245/40r15. mounted them to a set of 15x9" wheels.

245 next to a 225 rs3/ both on 15x9 wheels.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1444071025

245 on a 15x9 vs a 205 a6 on a 15x8.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1444071025

lest 205/50r15 on a 15x8 vs a 245/40r15 on a 15x9.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1444071025

245/40r15 on a 15x9 has a tiny amount of stretch to it.

225 vs 245, both on 15x9" wheel.

Brian at good win said that they ran all weekend and could still read the maxxis logo.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1444682257

this was after a VIR weekend. 150mph & I was pulling an easy 1.3G. without changing anything the my SM7 take offs with 5 heat cycles would pull 1.2g. so the SM7 stickers would be faster, but the maxxis would be better then running takeoffs. i do need more static camber on the front, compared to the Hoosier. i was running 3*

Arca_ex 10-12-2015 05:37 PM

Odd that you say you need more camber when on the RC1's.

I get inside edge wear on the RC1 but even wear on Hoosier R7's. Pyrometer readings also confirmed that the RC1 needs less camber than R7 on my car.

What wheels are you running?

We're finding the same thing in SuperMiata. Needs a bit less camber, most of cord the inside shoulder first. They seem to be fastest when run at the lowest pressure that lest them steer nice, dictated by pyro readings in morning practice. Usually a 2-3psi window. Run at the top end of that window they feel great but fall off earlier in the race. Run at the bottom of the window, they come up on the formation lap with some working and stay pretty good for the 25-30 minute back to back sprint race.

That pressure window can be anywhere though, some tracks its as low as 28psi, other tracks I have run 36psi on one corner.

Arca_ex 10-12-2015 08:11 PM

15x9" Advanti S1 for everything.

205 R7 (not SM7) vs. 225 and 245 RC1. The 205 R7 is in between the 225 and 245 RC1 when comparing size like you did in the previous photos except all were mounted on identical wheels.

We were running our fresh stickers this weekend at 22-25 hot, with excellent results. In our previous set, any higher than that caused the car to be a bit too loose for our liking.

205 on 15x8

i had to bump up the Driver Front PSi to stop the tire from folding over @VIR (clockwise track) i think i was at 36psi on that corner. the rest where looking good at 32psi hot. remember i have a heavy street car at 2730lbs. that might be a bit different then you guys with 2400lbs with driver. i also just got in real springs too. so we will see how that changes things.

i really need to bust out the sawzaw and start making this car lighter.

15x10s would cure that tire roll without needing to run excessive pressure.

I see the same camber requirements as everyone else between Hoosiers and RC-1s. SM6s on Rover wanted ~3.8*F camber, RC-1s should probably be in the 3.0-3.2 range.

mehh i'm not a fan of the 15x10 idea, kills the slip angle. anyway emilio is having the same thing with the same pressures. he's on 15x10.

"kills the slip angle"

um, what?

In Supermiata we run 225/45/15 RC-1's on 15x9's. If and when we get S1 class up and running (F/I), we'll run 245/40/15's on 15x10.

If you are running 245/40/15 on 15x9's, you're giving up some potential performance from the tire compared to running them on 15x10. This is not conjecture.

we've had this talk before. not going do jump back into again. i'm just reporting what i found.

Then why bring it up again?

We debated this a while back but I don't think you ever stated what it was you were observing or experiencing. Please be detailed so as not to confuse the less knowledgeable lurkers in this thread. You have to understand that not everyone here shares your breadth of personal and professional experience.
