Anyone over 300whp using RE71R?

Coming off of 195/60R14 rt615k on 14x7 wheels, tires are 6 years old and can't find any traction obviously. I decided it was dangerous/stupid to use them any further so I ordered a set of 205/50r15 re71r for my 15x7 wheels. I'd guess I'm at about 230whp right now but I'm about to turn it up, just curious if any of you have used this tire and how it hooks up for street driving. Obviously it is going to get wheel spin in 1st and 2nd, I'm realistic about that.

ryansmoneypit 04-04-2019 09:25 AM

300 will spin a 205 in 4th almost if you shift nice. It will spin 4tyh with a clutch dump shift.

1RMDave 04-04-2019 09:55 AM

Ya that's what I was worried about. What do you think it will take to dead hook in 3rd? Any of the 225's be able to do it or do I need something in a 245?

curly 04-04-2019 10:03 AM

Haven't personally ran them on a 300hp setup, no, but I can say that 205 RE71rs are faster around a track than a 225 RS4, it's a sticky fat tire for a supposed 205. That being said, if you're not getting them up to track temperatures, you may be powering through any 205 or 225 on the street, so a 245 would be more prudent. Then again turning down the boost and running cheaper 205 tires would be most prudent, but I don't want to get banned.

Well I don't run things here but I'd say that's grounds for a banning! I just got my EBC setup for boost x tps so I could just let off a bit if I am getting wheel spin, just be nice to put that power down if it's there. Thanks for your input!

You could do boost by gear and tune turn it up in each gear until you get wheel spin then back it down just a touch.

Disclaimer: I haven't ever tried boost by gear I just see some benefit to it.

245/40 RS4s will dead-hook 3rd gear on most pavement.

concealer404 04-04-2019 01:34 PM

So will pretty much any 200tw 205 at 300hp if your car isn't set up like a bag of dicks.

turbofan 04-04-2019 02:18 PM

My old and hard as shit RS3s will hook 3rd at 300whp on clean, dry pavement when it's over 70* outside. Hit a bump or try cornering or something and all bets are off, though. Not sure what Ryan is talking about 300whp spinning 4th on an aggressive shift, never experienced that unless it's like below freezing outside or bumpy pavement or something.

sixshooter 04-04-2019 05:30 PM

It doesn't get chilly here much. Hot pavement will let old, hard 225 rs3's I still have get loose a bit on interstate onramp in 2nd but never 3rd at 300+. I never dump the clutch like a teenager, though.

That reminds me I never drive the car on the street enough to wear out a set of street tires. They get hard and I give them to the neighbor kids for their stupid little Hondas.

I remember chirping 1st-4th gear during FFS! with 205 re71r on 15x8 in 80*F weather. Only had like 130whp. I also tried for hours driving like an absolute crazy person in super twisty roads to get those tires up to temp, on the street, no matter how hard I tried, I could never get any tire over 114*F. 2550lbs with driver in an NB2 with 3.4*/2.8*camber.

Im not sure if that helps you decide.

Also, dont drive like I used to on thr street, save for the track.

Thanks everyone for your input on this. I'll just have to wait and see in the next few weeks when weather warms up but I have some hope now at least. I would have gotten 225 RS-4's but I had 15x7 Enkei NT03's laying around from an old project so I stayed with a 205. I don't do clutch drops and my street driving is pretty tame compared to a lot of you I'm sure. I'll keep you posted.

But was this test on the same roads where Xidas break instantly and Gikens let you spin a wheel easily?

Well I mean relative to how I drove when I was 20. I'm more responsible about where and when I unleash lol

I understand that people on this website really like to band wagon, and I am aware you are just making a joke for a nice pat on the back... but I'm going to comment anyways.

I shift pretty fast. Its why I broke stuff...miata roadster shift bushing and side shifter inserts, shift linkage set screw came loose, every single FM clutch I tried slipped during reengagement with 130whp...etc. Vlad has been in car during 1-3 chirping, I cant remember if I did a 4th gear chirp with him in the car. IIRC we had looked at the shift times, and they were around 1 tenth clutch in clutch out.

I mean, I can forward you the email Inertia Labs sent me explaining how the seal is not stainless, and wasn't designed to withstand inclement weather or the road salt that comes with it. (stainless seal is very expensive, but can be added at your cost during a rebuild) Emilio also confirmed this. Not sure if you read the PSA thread I made.

Giken isn't a locking diff. I thought it was. That's why I was pissed when I would still get stuck lifting a wheel on my own driveway. I'll be selling the full diff combo including puddy mod hardware and delrin diff mounts if you'd like to see what happens first hand.

If you have never lived in southern utah, it's kind of hard to know what cars have to endure. It can hail literally any time of year (I've lived at 6000 and 8000ft) Have a freeze thaw cycle any time of year (at 8000ft) its a high desert climate where a steady 30mph wind is commonplace, making dust and debris a real issue (impossible to keep a clean car for more than 1 day) roads are in poor condition (and are salted usually november to april), not as bad as Michigan roads, but in my 12 mile daily commute, there are more than 10 patched potholes that still are huge divets. There is actually a city council meeting next week to try and improve our local roads, since motorcyclists have died from hitting potholes. Because of frequent flooding, there are ~6inch deep channels down EVERY street, even normal cars, and vans scrape their bumpers going in and out of entryways. So, a combination of salt, dust, low humidity, and severe suspension travel multiple times per day, yeah, a RACE shock doesnt stand a chance. Hence why I've had to rebuild Xidas TWICE.

My 300hp miata with 225 rs4 on 15x9 wheels will light up 1st and spin 2nd from 4500rpm to redline.
3rd dead hooks never spins in a straight line.

I'm in florida, so in colder climates, I can see how 3rd can also spin up on cold hard tires.

Im up here in Kentucky, 225/45/15 RS4 on my car. In the winter I was spinning 4th, now that its 70* outside I hook 3rd most of the time but like you said first and second will spin unless you finesse the go pedal a little.

Mech5700 04-07-2019 09:16 PM

I currently run 205/50R15's on 15x8's and they do really well when they are new, and I am just above 300 to the wheels. Once they get down to about 5/32's or so they don't do that great, especially when it's below say 70* outside. I did an autocross last week and spun out a couple times even after they were warmed up (obviously there was some driver error there, but I had traction issues the whole day). I think my next tire is going to be 225/45R15 RS4's.
