Default WTB 6-speed shifter, stock/short whatever

I am in need of a shifter to fit into my newly acquired 6-speed. The one out of my old one is totally loose and isnt the proper year or something.

I've got a 99 6-speed so let me know what you've all got!

How loose is it? slightly loose or what? I'm in the same boat. I might have a shifter, but it sounds like we might have the same problem. Mine just drops right into the shift rod with no effort at all, and has a little jiggle room. I'm going to buy a 2004 MS miata trans tomorrow. The guy is unsure if it has the shifter. If it does, then I will compare it to the one I already have and post some specs.

There are three size bushings from what I understand. One for the MS, one for the earlier 6-speed and one for the later non MS unit.

Nick; don't you have a shifter from a 5 speed transmission lying around?

I bought a 6 speed short shifter from ebay but never used it. I just put in the 5 speed one I already had in my car without any issues and that's the one I've been using ever since.

I'd offer you the ebay one for free but shipping it to you would be too costly.

Wait, so are you saying that the shifter ball on the end of the shifter are the same for all years, it's just the bushing that is different? I pick up my MS trans tomorrow.

I've got a six speed, it's an 01, but not sure it it is early or late. The shifter wasn't from the transmission.

Which version of the 6 speed shifter do you need? If you need one as a loaner until you find one to buy I have spare from my extra transmission (00 SE 6 speed).

There is no way to mistake the MS shifter from the regular shifter. MS is a lot bigger. Unfortunately I'm unsure of what version of the regular six speed shifter I have.

MS bushing diameter is 21.5mm
unknown six speed shifter bushing is 17.8 mm

FWIW, I'm using my old 92 5 speed shifter in what I'm now assuming to be a non-MS 6 speed and it is prom night tight.

Would you be able to pop the bushing off and measure the metal ball, i assume the looseness is from the shifter that i have NOT having a bushing.

Sorry, too late. I buttoned everything back up. I have two six speeds in my miata. One under it and one in the trunk. When I get it back from install I'll be able to measur the small diameter one without the bushing.

Anyone have any idea what the pre MSM trans shifters size is?
