Can you please look around and see what you can find. A would like one in decent condition, good brand as well. JVC, Sony, Panasonic preferred. Battery is not important as long as it has the wall adapter. Some of them I think are capable of recording in ntsc/pal and some are only capable of outputting in ntsc/pal. A multisystem would be perfect, but id settle for a Pal only, as all my tapes are pal.

I would send you a tape, if I had only one tape. But I have a box of tapes, if I had to guess id say 30 hours worth of video I need to work with.

Maybe a stupid question: How are you going to play the Pal camcorder on a NTSC tv?

I worked at Sony, so that is my 1st choice.
A D8 camera has the same tapes + a firewire connection... Little more expensive, but capable off copying the HI8 tapes directly to your PC. Burning a DVD and converting this to NTSC using Nero or simular...

A HI8 (second hand) will be around 50 euro (75 dollar) + shipping.
A D8 will be around 150-200 euro.
Guess you want the HI8...

Forgot to mention... They only play pal... No NTSC playback... (stupid rules in this country) You need something to convert the signal.

I have a multisystem TV. But besides that I also have a transcoder and a dvd recorder that can accept a pal signal and convert to ntsc on the fly during recording.

I have never heard of D8 before, just read about it. Pretty cool I must admit, But you are right a regular Hi8 will do.

Please dont just go out and buy a cam. If you can first at least tell me what you find and what my choices are. I dont mind paying more or paying less for certain cams. Granted cheaper the better.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it very much.

I understand, but i want to buy one close to my home. Or near work.
I know the defects of the camcorders and do not want to buy one without looking at it...

You would be amazed by the quality off the D8 pal camera's, The supersteadyshot makes it one off the best camera's sony has ever made.
Very nice steady image ,image quality same as DV (pal is better then NTSC)
Pal has 625 lines, NTSC 525...
All on a normal HI8 tape... (90 minute tape is 60 minutes digital recording time) And the firewire that even processes analogue tapes.

Did you live in europe or something?? Pal cassete's in the states????????

I want this to be as easy for you as possible, after all you are going out of your way to help me out. So whatever is easiest for you.

I am having trouble understanding those sites, Is it an auction?

The first one is fine, I don't need D8 because I have no D8 tapes and dont intend to use this camera for recording. Battery being dead is just another bargaining chip for me. If you can, contact the seller, take a look at the cam and make sure it works off the wall outlet. That's all I need, maybe even knock him down 10 bucks.

Can just tell me how much its going to cost shipped at the listed price.

Youre preaching to the choir dude. I know all this stuff.

I need a Pal unit because like I have a lot of tapes that were sent to me from Europe and I have a lot of my own. I need to sit down and convert them all to DVD's. They are taking up space and only dieing sitting in a box.

Shipping (cheapest) wil be € 24,45 x 1.5 (1 euro = 1.5 dollar) =36 dollar...
The whole camera is going to be over 100 dollar...(inc shipping)

It is an auction, but you are not committed to buy.
If the bid is high enough the seller contacts the buyer and hope he is still interested...
