Ok so lets take a hypothetical journey:
lets say a person I know keeps wondering about bolting a complete MSM setup to his 2001, as in: complete OEM MSM manifold/turbo/downpipe/exhaust/airbox/intercooler. Completely oem, pretty much completely plug and play, with the stock airbox, heat shields, the whole 9 yards. Then run like 8psi or something like that with supporting engine management and a wideband. Keep the stock clutch, keep the stock injectors, exhaust, etc. Basically a stock vvt/msm. Shoot for like 180-190whp.
How silly is this idea?

I'd imagine so, and would expect those people to chime in here, or at least get some links to some build threads where this spedifically was done. I'm googling but not coming up with too many build threads and dyno plots, despite knowing that this should be easy straightforward. I'd be more interested in seeing dyno plots of this setup than anything. The point/goal would be complete OEM looks and compatability with a bit more pep, not big power and torque. So basically, no more than 200whp. I get to dabble with 350whp-450whp subaru's and evo's on a weekly basis, so there's really no need for an FM2 setup.

My 1999 10th Anniversary Mazdaspeed Miata.
You've seen that car before but that thread seemed to have some pertinent info. Works with stock exhaust, needs the later headlights that you'd already have by starting with an '01.
Hope that helps somehow some bit.
G: those FM2 bits are for YOUR car bro!

Ok, let me just state again, that the only reason I'm considering this is for the OEM-ness of it all. I just want another 40-50hp while keeping the car as stock looking and sounding as possible.
So aside from power potential, which I don't need, what about the FM2 is better?

Spool? Fitment? Less complicated bullshit? A supported and common turbo? I'm confused how someone who has seen a stock MSM setup can even ask that question.

quit kidding yourself vlad. 200whp? Seriously? And if you put an MSM intercooler on your car I'm going to, uh, make fun of you. Or something. Proclaim it from the house tops.
I wouldn't be suprised if the FM2 is a more satisfying setup even at low boost. Plus, why not run 240WHP instead of 200? No reason not to.

It is.
And while he's at it, Ebay H-beams and some E85 action.
Ok but really... i'd piece together a Begi/FM setup used from various forums, but do a 2554, because it'll be the most hilarious 200-220whp ever. VVT + 2554 = lulz for days.
And yes, i'm serious. It'll be awesome fun for the street.

See now you're making it sound more appealing. Still not sold on that though, and to be quite honest this is not gonna happen soon. I'm thinking like towards the end of summer or something.
Though really the biggest reason I am tempted by the MSM setup is cause it will look stock in my engine bay, it has all the pieces like intake, fmic piping, it will bolt right up to the stock exhaust, etc etc etc. Literally the only part that would need to be fabricated is the oil feed/return.
I bet if I did it right, I'd be able to disconnect the wastegate and pass smog with it cause most the stupid smog techs won't even tell the difference.
But a simple log 2554 setup is appealing. I don't want 240whp. I've had that, and I've had 300, and I've had more, this isn't about getting addicted to boost, this is about making the car being able to outrun a minivan with MINIMUM parts and money invested. 190-200whp will do
*edit: and again, just to be clear, I'm just thinking/dreaming about this right now. not even made any plans yet.
