State of the car last night:

With my current life I pretty much get 1 day a week to work on the car. So yesterday I was determined to make most of it - hence going to sleep at 4am.

What I did:
  • Cleaned the engine bay a bit. 7000 miles of crap, including a lot of sand (beach...)
  • Installed Bosch knock sensor. It was drilled for M8 bolt so I enlarged the hole to M10 and mounted it in stock location.
  • Enlarged turbine housing bolts to 10mm so I can mount it on my manifold
  • Found connectors for VICS solenoid and knock sensor.
  • ????
  • Installed a "new" alternator.

I also wasn't happy with the mixing manifold. I had it flipped 180* and heatercore return pipe chopped off real short. However, I hated the o-ring on that pipe. So I got an -10AN fitting welded on. Got it done at Mach V in Sterling - same place I got all my welding done. Can't praise these guys enough. This is a very tight spot and I wasn't sure if the welder would be able to do it. No problem, apparently. Cost me $45.

Today I wasn't supposed to work on the car but plans changed and I have a free day. So going back to the garage right now.

Also Mach V is having a dyno night first week of October - https://www.miataturbo.net/local-mee...36/#post930054

Hopefully I'll be able to dyno the car then. It's the same dyno as I did EFR6258 pull.

Here's a good picture showing overall quality. New one is a lot rougher, inside and outside. Old housing is buttery smooth everywhere.

Taking a beer break right now.

Redid my coolant reroute. I was using the Tahoe/Escalade hose before and I didn't like it too much. It fit but needed a lot of muscling to get it positioned correctly and then it still rubbed a bit. Worked for 7000 miles but I didn't like it. Plus the Trackspeed radiator has a different inlet - meaning I had to redo it anyways.

So I got a 1.25" brass pipe from Home Depot. I think its meant for sinks or something. Was $15 and J-shaped. Cut the bend off and was left with a nice straight pipe.
Some diameters:
- Kia waterneck - 35mm (1 3/8")
- Escalade hose - 35mm (1 3/8")
- Radiator inlet - 32mm (1 1/4")
- Home Depot pipe - 32mm (1 1/4")

So basically some hoses are a bit loose and required 2 hose clamps. Overall I'm a lot happer with this layout - hardpipe in the middle. However, I will try to locate correct-shaped silicone hoses for this and a proper beaded aluminium pipe. So this is more like a proof of concept that i'll run till the end of season.

I also put the wareneck on and here's how the heater hose looks like now:

Pretty sexy.

Did you have to send both old turbos back before you got the new ones? Honestly I'd swap turbine housings before returning.

I think your turbo is still alive because you never ran boost >20 psi

I like how it turned out but right now the heater hose points up. I would like it to point down and go below the turbo. Right now if I do that, it will be in the way of the radiator hose. If I ever go AN hoses for heater core (yeah right...) I could use baller fittings like these - Aeroquip FBM4444 - Aeroquip Reusable Hose Ends - Overview - SummitRacing.com

The housings are quite molested after turbine wheel explodes. It's violent and scratches up/dents everything in the way.

Wouldn't reuse it. I just took a carbine bit to the new housing and smoothed out the inside. It's nice now.

Maybe these arent as nice because they rushed this batch out. At least thats what I'm hoping. If this becomes the norm then it'll get mine coated and I'll make a turbo blanket for it, rather than just coating it.

I coated and wrapped my manifold. It was touchable after hard driving. Yay

Engine bay is pretty much done. Just have to put in oil and go over all the bolts to make sure I didn't forget to tighten something. Time is tight, hopefully I can get it running tomorrow. I changed the trigger setup to finally use the 36-1 crank wheel, so I hope I can get it started without any issues.

Also, my oil/water lines setup. Instead of the normal EFR plugs I'm using some magic BMW engine coolant plug - same size, M14x??.
Oil feeds are straightforward - -3AN (or -4, forget) line for feed, -10AN line for drain with 3/8NPT to AN adapter. Feed from side of block, drain into oil pan directly under the turbo. Oil pan has an -10AN bung welded to it.

Coolant is a bunch of random parts. One side is a M14 to 1/8 NPT adapter with a stainless 90* 1/8 NPT barbed fitting. This goes to the oil cooler. Other one is a banjo bolt with another 1/8 NPT barbed fitting (but straight). This goes to the mixing manifold.

The other coolant ports are blocked with BMW plugs because stock ones need a hex fitting and I can never find one. BMW plugs are just 13mm socket...

Also here's how the radiator and intercooler fit. The stock air guide actually fits perfectly with this setup.

Finally, here's my new safety gear. Going lemons racing at the end of october. I forsee using this gear a lot
