There have been a rash of police raid-related stories in the news of late. Here’s a quick rundown:

Police raid roundup - The Washington Post

...Meanwhile, a federal judge in Utah has ruled that the government isn’t obligated to compensate you when the police damage your home during a mistaken raid. There’s nothing particularly unusual about this ruling. It’s consistent with a long line of qualified immunity rulings when it comes to these raids. But as with the previous item, it’s worth reiterating: The government can send armed men to raid a home, they can then raid the wrong home, and the government is under no obligation to compensate the people who were wrongly raided...

police hate cosplay.

LiveLeak.com - Family: Utah Wookie was cosplaying Samurai Champloo when shot, killed by police

The lawyer for the family of Darrien Hunt, the 22-year-old man allegedly shot and killed by police officers in Saratoga Springs, Utah last week, said that the family believes Hunt was cosplaying an anime character when he was shot. In particular, the family’s attorney Randall Edwards said that they believe Hunt was dressed as the character Mugen from the anime Samurai Champloo, with a Japanese-style katana sword on his back.

On September 10, two officers confronted Hunt while he was carrying the sword near a credit union in Saratoga Springs. After one shot was fired near the credit union, Hunt was shot and killed about 200 yards away near a Panda Express restaurant.

Police said Hunt brandished the unsheathed sword and lunged at the officers. Edwards said that an independent autopsy reported that Hunt was shot six times in the back.
6 in the back always stops people who lunge at me too.

Stun gun death puzzles cops, kin - Times Union

Goss said he saw Satre being combative with officers.

"They were trying to get him to calm down," he said. Goss added that he saw police try to wrestle Satre to the ground, and that while he did not hear officers use a stun gun on Satre he heard the electronic buzzing.

Goss' father, George Goss III, said Satre hadn't had any run-ins with police in the neighborhood before.

uhhh?

School Says Students Need to Hear What Madman's Gunfire Sounds Like - Hit & Run : Reason.com

This local news announcement about a Champion, Ohio, school's upcoming shooting drill makes an insane idea—shooting blanks in the hallways of a middle and high school—sound almost festive:
The sounds of gunfire will ring through the halls of two Champion school buildings this afternoon.
Ah, the ringing sound of gunfire! Sort of like caroling except... chillingly fatalistic and completely at odds with the fact that school shootings, though horrific, remain exceedingly rare. Kids are safer than ever before, and schools are just about the safest environments for them.

Even so, many schools remain fascinated with the idea of holding practice shooting drills, as if learning to deal with an armed intruder is some essential rite of passage for kids.

But do these events really need a soundtrack to seem more real? From WFMJ:

According to a letter sent home to parents of students, police will be firing blanks from a gun at the high school and middle school so students can hear what gunshots sound like.

The exercise is part of A.L.I.C.E. training. A.L.I.C.E. stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate.

This guy shouldn't have been antagonizing police by allegedly not wearing his seatbelt. Then the cop wouldn't of had to shoot him when he went to get his licence when he was asked.

my favorite part is the 4th shot when the guy has his hands completely raised in the air.

but im sure he had good reasons to get shot. im sure he collect welfare, or has a smartphone, or his brother is a criminal or something. remember criminals have no rights to life.

VIDEO RELEASED: SC trooper charged with felony in shooting at traffic stop over seat belt violation

An S.C. trooper who stopped a man for a seat belt violation outside Columbia and then shot him – apparently without provocation – was arrested Wednesday and charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

Sean Groubert, 31, a lance corporal who was fired from the Highway Patrol after the shooting incident, now faces 20 years in prison if convicted of wrongfully shooting the driver, Levar Jones.

Groubert was booked Wednesday evening at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. He was fired from the patrol last Friday.

Wednesday night, in a hearing at the jail, Magistrate Ethel Brewer set Groubert’s bond at $75,000.

A video of the Sept. 4 shooting incident was played at Groubert’s bond hearing.

The video shows Groubert firing repeatedly at Jones, who was not armed and who was not behaving aggressively. Jones was struck at least once, in the hip. He spent time in the hospital and is now out of the hospital recuperating.

update:

CHP Beating Victim To Get $1.5M; Officer Resigns « CBS Los Angeles

Marlene Pinnock, the homeless woman seen captured on video being beaten in July by a CHP officer, will get $1.5 million to settle her case.

The officer identified in federal court papers as Daniel L. Andrew will resign as part of her settlement.

The 51-year-old Pinnock said she was walking along and minding her own business when the officer, who said he was trying to restrain her to keep her from walking into traffic, tackled her and punched her repeatedly in the face.

The CHP originally reported Pinnock, who has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and was off her medication at the time of the incident, did not seek medical treatment. She actually spent about a month in the hospital.

Are you stalking my Facebook? I posted the last two videos last night.

I also read that in this county open carry was legal and the 9-1-1 caller has admitted to lying about the initial call.

True story:

So my family is up here in NYC on vacation. I've been showing them around town in the afternoons.

The UN General Assembly is meeting all this week, and the President is in town. So there are a lot of streets closed off. (1st ave near the UN, 42nd east of 2nd, etc.) New Yorkers hate this week. Happens every year.

Police everywhere. NYPD, FBI, Secret Service, snipers on rooftops, black helicopters... It's a little bit like an occupation. Lots of big, scary-looking guns of the sort that left-thinking people know should be banned from private ownership.

Yesterday we were wondering around in this area. Stopped at the barrier outside the UN building and stood for a while looking at the diplomats come and go. A heavily-armored Cadillac limo drove by with an escort. After a few minutes, an NYPD cop asked us to move along, indicating that we were not permitted to stand peacefully on the sidewalk and look at a building with a bunch of flags in front of it.

I suppose that I could have stood my ground, claimed that I had every right to be there in this public space and was committing no crime, gotten belligerent, argued with the cop, called him names, etc.

Instead, my family and I moved along. Wound up having a really nice dinner at the Peking Duck House on Mott st.

For some reason, the cops left us alone, and didn't even shoot / taze / best up any of us at all, despite the fact that there were two women and a 9 year old girl in the group who would have made easy targets.

Not sure if one thing had to do with the other, I assume it was just coincidence and that we got lucky this time.

True story.

Is that supposed to be funny, or sarcastic, because I don't get it?

So a cop told you to move along for no reason, and you did? Next week, more streets are closed, and you just keep moving along. Next week, you just need to stay inside today sir...

That public servant had no business telling you anything in that scenario, the problem is he thinks he does, in fact he does so just because. I would have no pride in submitting to his bullshit, because that's just one more little brain cell telling him he can get away with it. If his supervisors told him, good, put the peon in a pinch. Make his job miserable, let him blame his superiors.

I live in Lawrence KS, Mass street is full of cops and drunk college kids at 2AM on the weekends. They love telling people to move along, but they hardly ever do. Most times, there's lots of drunken shouting and yelling along the lines of "FTP." Can't say anyone's ever been beat in front of me for that, haven't read about it either. Must be a lot of lucky people here?

No. It's just an anecdote about something that happened.

I could also tell you about the Peking Duck that we had, and it wouldn't be funny either, although there's really no way to convey in text just how good it was.
