Another man dies while in custody of Kern County deputies | Local & Regional News | Bakersfield Now - News, Weather and Sports

Officials said Ledesma became uncooperative when the deputy attempted to detain him. Ledesma resisted arrest and fought with the deputy for approximately two minutes before additional deputies arrived, including a K-9 unit.

The dog bit Ledesma, and deputies used "impact weapons" and control holds to subdue Ledesma. Officials did not say what "impact weapons" were used.

Ledesma was taken to Kern Medical Center for injuries sustained during his arrest. The press release said Ledesma developed medical complications and was admitted for further treatment. His condition worsened, and Ledesma died on Wednesday. A cause of death has not yet been determined.

Preliminary toxicological reports revealed Ledesma had PCP, amphetamines and Benzodiazapine in his system.
3rd person in last 4 months to die in the custody of this police department.

gone fishing:

I work in IT for a non-standard car insurance company. While, I don't know much about the policies we sell, I do know enough in case issues come up. Our company policy is that the company cannot give insurance to employees so we have to go with someone else. Also, you know how they say make friends with receptionists and IT at a new company? This also hold true for lawyers. Make friends with them, having lawyers friends can come in handy. We have several in-house insurance lawyers, one of which I'm extremely close with, who is also my girlfriend's best friend's husband. My girlfriend is also a claims adjuster with the same company I work for. All of this information is relevant later.

So, a while back I decide I want to trade in my car for a new one. The day before I go to the dealer, a Friday, I call my insurance agent to check what I need to do after I buy the new car. He confirmed that their policy is that the new car is covered for 14 days until it has to be added to the policy or I would be considered uninsured and since they're closed on Saturdays I would have to wait to add it anyway. No problem, my company has the same policy. Not really relevant, but I know my agent pretty well since I setup the network in his office when he changed locations a few years ago.

I get to the dealer, pick out my car, sign paper work, all the boring stuff. The salesmen checks my ID and proof of insurance. Since he works in the same area as my insurance agent, he's familiar with my insurance policy, and reconfirms the 14 day rule. I drive off the lot in my new car and arrive at my girlfriend's house a few minutes later. While "ooooooing" and "awwwwing" over it she decides she wants to go for a ride. I needed to go to Best Buy anyway to pick out a new radio to install in it.

We hop in and head to our destination. I go through a green light over a major highway with Best Buy on the other side. As soon as I cross I look in my rear view and see a cop light me up. Great...

Me: I wasn't speeding, was I?

Girlfriend: No, I don't think so. That light was green too. I don't know why he's pulling you over.

I was right next to the Best Buy anyway so I just pulling into the lot and the cop follows and this is the encounter that followed:

Officer: Good afternoon. License and proof of insurance please.
Me: Sure.

Officer: Alright, just sit tight and I'll be with you in a moment.

A few minutes pass before he comes back. I really didn't expect what was about to happen.

Officer: Alright sir, it seems we have a problem.

Me: Oh? What's the issue, officer?

Officer: Well, the insurance card you gave me isn't for the car you're driving.

Me: Well, I just rolled off the lot with this car about an hour ago. The car is covered for 14 days until it has to be added to the policy.

Officer: And who told you that?

Me: My agent. I talked to him yesterday.

Officer: Well, that not how insurance works, sir. You traded in the car that's on this policy and no longer own it. This car is uninsured right now. I could arrest you and tow your car.

Me: Officer, like I said, I confirmed this with my agent and also the dealer. The agent's office is closed on Saturdays anyway so I can't exactly drive over there now. I work in the industry and my girlfriend here is a car insurance adjuster. The company we work for has the same policy.

Officer: Alright, this is what I'm going to do. I'm going to let you off with a warning. In the meantime, you need to take this car home and park it since it's not insured.
(at this point I'm getting pissed)

Me: No, sir. Like I've said multiple times, I confirmed the 14 day rule with my agent.

Officer: Sir, I've been doing this for 30 years...

Me: I don't care how long you've been doing this. You don't work for my insurance company. I called and confirmed it with my agent and my salesmen confirmed it as well. Now, if you're going to arrest me, arrest me and I can call my lawyer, who happens to specialize in insurance law since he works at my company, and we can let him sort this out. I have him on speed dial if you'd like to talk to him.

Officer: One moment, sir.

He goes back to his car and I can see him talking on his radio in my rear view. My girlfriend mentions something that hadn't hit me yet, he never told me why he pulled me over.

Officer: Alright sir, you're free to go. Here's your license and insurance card. Be safe and have a nice day.

Me: Hold on, officer. Why did you pull me over to begin with?

Officer: Well, you have a dealer tag. In my 30 years of doing this, I've caught a number of people with stolen cars that had dealer tags.
Me: I didn't know that was reasonable suspicion to pull someone over. (I really didn't feel like arguing this)

Officer: Sure is. Have a good day.

After the encounter, my girlfriend calls our lawyer friend and tells him the story. He basically said that the cop was an idiot and had never heard of anyone being pulled over for a dealer tag, unless it was expired. He said he may have been "fishing" for someone to pull over.

Looking back, I wish I had turned on the camera on my phone. That would have been handy in the event that he did arrest me.

I was hit by a car mirror when a guy zinged me on the bicycle yesterday. I called the police with his license plate number and they totally did not care and they told me they would not do anything unless I want to press charges against him.

I'm going to the city council meeting tomorrow and I'm on the open-mic hour.

Not surprised.

Every time a car passes a school bus when it's flashing reds (with the stop sign arm out) we have to report it in as a district policy. But the cops tell us that they can't and won't even do anything about it. They say no proof, it didn't happen...

Wow. I know a girl down here in SC who got in some deep **** for that. She drove past one picking up kids one afternoon. A little while later she was on the interstate and pulled over. She ended up getting multiple tickets out of it.

Interesting to read through this thread. I actually read the original article that spawned it when it first came out.

One thing that happened to me when the whole gun control thing hit after the theater shooting and the Newtown shooting was that a cop friend of a friend in his argument towards private ownership of guns indicated to me that if I were to be in trouble there is really nothing the cops will be able to do about it and that I should own a gun for home defense, because by the time they get there my family will likely be dead, raped, etc.

Great stuff right? And these are the same guys who will bring SWAT even if they just suspect that someone in a place is armed. Hell, just to serve a warrant.

Kind of a Catch-22, I'm either killed by the criminals because I don't have a gun or killed by the cops who see my gun and think I'm a criminal.

2 NEWS obtains video of trooper's collision with motorcycle

Dash camera video is commonly released after newsworthy incidents as it is considered a public record. Unlike other newsworthy incidents, however, the Ohio State Police refused to release it, citing a request from the Greene County prosecutor. In court documents, prosecutor Stephen Haller called the video “evidence in a criminal investigation.”

Floyd found guilty of racketeering - Local - Northwest Florida Daily News

CRESTVIEW — Former Police Maj. Joseph Floyd was found guilty Thursday evening of racketeering.

http://bostonherald.com/news_opinion...ces_sentencing

BOSTON — Prosecutors are asking a federal judge to sentence a former Massachusetts state trooper convicted of extortion to five years in prison for what they call a pattern of abusive behavior.

John Analetto is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court Tuesday. He was convicted in May of threatening a gambler who owed more than $3,000 to a bookie cooperating with investigators, and fired in June.

http://www.kansascity.com/2013/09/08...-on-trial.html

Tuesday is a day this town has long waited for. At 9 a.m. in a second-story courtroom in the Cass Justice Center, jury selection begins in the murder trial of Jeffrey D. Moreland, a former Grandview police officer accused of killing Roberts, 30, one fall day while her toddler son was at the baby sitter.

Her husband found her body in a full bathtub, the water red with blood.

Man caught illegally sleeping on beach is beaten on video and has his head held underwater by police | The Libertarian Republic

‘Mr. Davis does not appear to resist until it becomes clear that he is in fear of drowning. In fact, during this entire incident, Mr. Davis can be heard yelling, “I can’t breathe” and “You’re trying to drown me,”’ the suit goes on to say. Santos, Chapman and three other officers who arrived on the scene allegedly continued beating the suspect as he lay in the surf and ‘forcibly submerged’ his head in the tide while kicking him. In response to the lawsuit seeking damages to be determined by a jury, Galveston Police Chef Henry Porretto told the Houston Chronicle that the plaintiff has a criminal history that includes two drug convictions, and he was possibly facing a third one when he was apprehended by police in March. According to Porretto, the 34-year-old suspect was seen by officers grabbing something from the seat of his car and stuffing the item into his pocket before attempting to flee the responding officers. An internal investigation into allegations of police brutally determined that the Galveston officers used necessary force during Davis’ arrest, Porretto said.
