I work as an R&D contractor for a major orthopedics company. Thanks to the medical devices tax, my company just canned 30 people in research and my contract position can not be renewed after it expires in a year and a half. I was supposed to move into a non-contract position in the fall that would have nearly doubled my income, but it no longer exists.
Despite all of that, the most disturbing part of the deal to me is that research is being cut, and it is going to effect many more companies than mine. Say goodbye to cutting-edge American medical products.

GAO Launched an Obamacare Sting Operation?and Almost All Fake Insurance Applications Were Approved - NationalJournal.com
An undercover operation found that the majority of fake Obamacare applications submitted were approved by the health law's enrollment system.
Fake applicants were able to get subsidized insurance coverage in 11 of 18 attempts, according to a report from the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office. The agency conducted the sting operation to test the strength of the Affordable Care Act's eligibility-verification system.
The findings will be discussed at a House Ways and Means hearing Wednesday. They were revealed in an advance copy of the testimony from Seto Bagdoyan, head of GAO's Forensic Audits and Investigative Service, provided to the Associated Press.

Obamacare program costs $50,000 for every American who gets health insurance | Daily Mail Online
- Stunning figure comes from Congressional Budget Office report that revised cost estimates for the next 10 years
- Government will spend $1.993 TRILLION over a decade and take in $643 BILLION in new taxes, penalties and fees related to Obamacare
- The $1.35 trillion net cost will result in 'between 24 million and 27 million' fewer Americans being uninsured – a $50,000 price tag per person at best
- The law will still leave 'between 29 million and 31 million' nonelderly Americans without medical insurance
- Numbers assume Obamacare insurance exchange enrollment will double between now and 2025

That said, $50,000 per person per decade comes out to $417 per month, which is not an outrageous figure as compared to private, non-employer-subsidized health insurance.
I would be curious to know how this compares to the average per-person burdened cost in countries with established universal healthcare.

What happens if my friend claimed before hand a set salary per year, and thus obtained obama care at a "subsidized" tax credit cost, said friend paid for this insurance for the duration of the year, and come tax season for that year realizes he made under half of his projected income, and now falls under the minimum wage bar where he would have had to get medicaid ?

Those aren't legal anymore, much to my dismay. I used to have that plan when I was self-employed.
My family out-of-pocket max is now $3k. I think that's annoyingly low, but the premiums are employer-subsidized so I'm not going to complain.
TL;DR.
Medical bills are not killing "us." They are burdensome for a certain relatively small percentage of the population who, for a variety of reasons, have found themselves in a position in which they are unable to maintain an adequate standard of living for themselves.
Just a guess, since I haven't read the code, but the majority of federally run and subsidized programs (at least, those which involve the direct transfer of money) provide for the filing of amended statements after the fact.
(Think IRS amended returns.)

$17,244 annual insurance premiums. Being self-employed means I get to deduct 100% "above the line" so the rest of you at least get to subsidize me... Thank you!
Seriously, my premiums are 28% less than before "Obamacare". My wife's are 20% higher (she's the picture of health...)
